  1. Re: Advice after a removal from a fallen log

I would wait on the super and let them draw out some frames and check for eggs to see if you have a queen.

That's normal, just make sure the queen has room to lay.

    Re: package concerns

It appears the one queen is a dud, she's run out of sperm. If the other has brood and eggs it only takes an egg to make another queen so you could put a frame with eggs in the back filling hive and...

    Re: Is this normal?

I probably would rotate, if you see larva and brood the queen is there. Yes it's normal for bees to move upward and many times the workers will push the queen back down in the lower box, but not...

    Re: Capped queen cells

Mary, you are lucky to get to hear a queen piping, i know beekeepers that have had bees for years and have never heard a queen piping. Such a big noise coming from a little bug.:D

    Re: Processing "Slum-Gum"

The only thing i've found a use for slum gum is to start a fire in the wood stove in the winter, works great.

  11. Re: Does anyone recognize this shrubs flower?

I have a shrub with that type of flower, False Indigo(sp?) it is evasive, likes creek and pond banks, it blooms for about ten days and the bees are all over it.

    Re: Finding Drone Concentration Areas

Without a scent trail how would a virgin queen that has never been out of the hive know which way to go or where? Maybe she has an escort?

    Re: Italians outpacing Carniolan

All bees will swarm when the queen runs out of room. My experience with Italians is they build up fast and good honey producers, the bad side is the queen doesn't know when to quit laying in the fall...

    Re: found queen cells

Sounds like they are superseding , i would leave them alone or you could end up with no queen.
  15. Re: Why do northerners buy southern bees?

That's the reason i start raising my own queens in July to replace old queens and make nucs. I buy queens(mostly Carni.) for new blood so to say, to keep inbreeding down. I have bees in 4 counties...
  16. Re: Why do northerners buy southern bees?

Thanks H/C i'll give them a try, do you have to order in Dec. or Jan. to get on there list?

    Re: 2nd Brood box question

I think 2 deep brood boxes do better than the deep and med., it gives the queen more room to build up and have a bigger work force. I would make a top entrance/exit hole on the inter cover, it gives...
  18. Re: Why do northerners buy southern bees?

There are more sources for queens and packages advertised in the mags. from the south for early starts. I would like to find some good northern April or May Carni. queens.
