Re: Florida dept AG apiary inspection

I know my experience is anecdotal, but I have never used TM or Tylosin to address AFB. I have had cases of active and visually detectable AFB, which I burned. It didn't spread like wild fire.

    In...

    Re: creamed honey

If you do that in NY you open yourself to being inspected by Health Inspectors because you are then processing food. Though I know no one who has been inspected.

    Re: creamed honey

Yes Roland, that would have been Dr. Dyce. He developed the Dyce Method of Creamed Honey Production. Cornell University held the Patent.
  4. Re: 2 hives without Queens / Did they die from Dysentary or Nosema? Appears as Mild C

Pardon me for asking, but, isn't the stuff you are asking about called Fumidil-B, active ingredient Fumagilin? Nosema, not Noxema. What do the directions which should have come w/ the product...

Re: Florida dept AG apiary inspection

You over estimate the virulence and efficacy of AFB and its impact on a commercial operation.

It's not like their are experienced and knowledgeable people beating down doors to fill the positions.

Seems to me like FL should pair experienced and knowledgeable Inspectors w/ Novice...

Re: Florida dept AG apiary inspection

Rick, once the "AFB" was detected, did the Inspector inspect all of the rest of the colonies in that yard? That's what would have happened in NY. At least that's the way it used to be.

    I never...

Re: Double Nucs, has anyone tried....

A friend of mine has done something like that when he had more nucs than he had hives to put them in. He set two nucs side by side, put an excluder across both of them and supered up above.

Re: I need suggestions on transporting a Nuc.

The back of your pickup is good. Fill up w/ fuel before you pick up the nuc. Once it is loaded don't stop until you get home. If that isn't possible or practical screen the entrance so the bees don't...
  11. Re: Moving hives 100 feet - any preferred sequence?

They are probably HOT because they are queenless. Chances are that their demeanor will calm down once they have a laying queen.

Move them all at once and be done w/ it.

Re: Do you check before you place your hives

I think you should keep a cpl of hives at home to see if your assumptions pan out.

    Re: How often to inspect?

That doesn't make sense. How will you know whether the queen cell produced a queen? Mating nucs are managed on shorter time frames than that. Left alone for a month the queen would have the mating...

Re: Do you check before you place your hives

Does it? Does Arkansas have laws about how close one apiary can be to another? Does someone on the State level tell a new beekeeper where yards already are so they won't put them too close to another...

Re: Do you check before you place your hives

If your hives are visible from the road then that's just rude. If not, then nothing wrong was done. I imagine that the beekeeper asked the landowner if they could put bees on the property and may or...

    Re: 5 frame nuc question.

If the outside frames of the nuc are mostly honey then I would spread them and insert combs between those and the other two or three combs. If there are lots of bees you could insert empty combs...
  21. Re: Responsible thing to do - to sting or not to sting?
