Re: Do I Have Afrcanized Honey Bees?

I would concur except for the idea that genetic testing would help resolve your situation which it won't (I'm speaking to the OP). I say this because it seems that you think testing is the next best...
  2. Re: How many frames to put in 8 frame box?

I buy 8 frame boxes from a local supplier that are on the wide side, 14" rather than the standard 13 3/4". It makes enough a difference that I put in 8 frames and get a nice gap on the sides which...

    Re: Ferals

@ Jonathan, you have accurately described my 5-10 year breeding plan.

With respect you cite this observation, mantra-like, every time the issue of AHB hybrid/feral mutts and mite resistance...

    Re: Ferals

If that were the case I'd have people begging to take my feral bees off my hands but proving mite resistance isn't as simple as that. Nor are my area feral bees considered gentle or "productive" in a...

    Re: Feeding back honey

Why dilute? Just feed it back regular strength, the bees have less work to do to make it useable.
  6. Re: Impediments to importing European stock?

"One of the biggest challenges is the Honeybee Act, introduced by the U.S. government in 1922 to stop all importation of honey bees to the United States for the purpose of preventing the introduction...
  7. Impediments to importing European stock?

It's been noted that A. mellifera ligustica hasn't been imported to the US for decades as a pure breeding stock. Does anyone know of any realistic barriers to importing fresh genetics from Italy or...

Re: Bee space at the top of the hive.

Perhaps similar to what others are saying, but what I have are shims on every hive under the migratory cover. My shims are made from 1" x 2" seasoned pine and allow me to feed patties or baggies of...
  9. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

In my defense, I did state my bias and skepticism in the beginning. If being skeptical precluded anyone from asking questions then nothing would ever be accomplished. You seem to think that being...
  10. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Agreed, nobody need take anything anybody says as evidence that they NEED to do anything for their hives. I really couldn't agree more. The thread is called, in part, "...are they bogus?" and to that...
  11. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

This is part and parcel of my doubt about about EO's in general, as if all EO's had the same properties then they must all do something beneficial. Thymol isn't an EO any more than Aspirin is willow...
  12. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Reading your link and turning in, wiped. Will follow up tomorrow.

    Cheers,

  13. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

"extracted from Thymus vulgaris (common thyme) and various other kinds of plants as a white crystalline substance"
Not an essential oil, from Wikipedia.

"Thymol is only slightly soluble in water...
  14. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

My cut out 2nd yr maintained colony loss rates are currently at 15%. I've only been called to remove one dead out after wax moths had chewed the dead colony to the point of honey leaking from the...
  15. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Am I correct in thinking that thymol isn't an essential oil (Oil of Thyme) and a constituent of it? Thymol is a derivative, purified form of oil of thyme and not an essential oil?

  16. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Appreciated, my request in this thread was to be presented with some of those studies or papers on the subject. Searching for academic papers can be real chore considering the mountains of wordy...
  17. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

This thread isn't about Bond beekeeping, but essential oil treatments. I'm assuming that you are here to "just to grind away on a personal agenda", so I've PM'ed you some reading on the subject....
  18. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

I never said anything about "safely prevents and eliminate varroa", you're quoting yourself.

The point of Bond beekeeping isn't to eliminate or prevent varroa either, it's to tolerate it. Since...
  19. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

If after three attempts you still have nothing valuable to add, it's safe to assume that "we're done".

  20. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

From the study you linked, in reference to essential oils used in fed syrups: "places the essential oils into the food chain and prevents oviposition by female mites or retards the development of...
  21. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Thanks Rusty, that is exactly the kind of information I'm looking for.

  22. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

So by your definition being intellectually curious means being wholly receptive of accepted wisdom? Critical thinking requires being capable of challenging even one's own bias', even if the outcome...
  23. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Bond Beekeeping, or "To Live and Let Die". I don't treat for varroa or anything else, most of my manipulations deal with space management and fostering disease tolerance and hygienic behavior. Bees...
  24. Re: Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

Because I'm intellectually curious. Also, "soft" TF is considered to be "sort of" TF, so for me it's a matter of understanding what differences exist within the TF community. I also study treatments...
  25. Essential oil treatments, are they bogus?

I hear people talk all the time about using essential oils for their bees, in treating them and to benefit bee health, yet I never really hear how these oils work. I mean that specifically I don't...
