Re: Why isn't she being attacked??

"I keep my queens and bees, even when they are bad. "

Spoken by someone who doesn't live in an area where Africanized bees are a reality.... Around here, a mean hive gets stopped, you certainly...

Re: Why isn't she being attacked??

I treated in Nov, but I've never had mite loads make them mean. I installed 4 queens in Oct, I think I got a mean one...

Re: Why isn't she being attacked??

That's usually what I do, right up until you get a mean hive. I can't walk by my hives 40 feet away now. Going to suit up and pop the tops. First one that comes out in force to try to kill me,...
  4. Re: Results of Opening the Sides of the Broodnest

Thanks Matt, I thought that might be the actual goal, so I will go with that. Last year I got swarmed a lot, I really want to cut down on it this year and this seems like the easiest way if you...
  5. Re: Results of Opening the Sides of the Broodnest

    Hi Matt,
I'm going to start next week as I can tell my hives are building. I've got a question, is it more effective to force the HOLE, or if I've got empty comb, use that? You loss the forced...

Re: Open feeding: pollen vs syrup

open feeding works fine as long as it is a considerable distance from your hives. Mine is about 75 yards away, never had any trouble with robbing once I moved it away from my hives.
    I will feed...
  11. Re: beetle blaster vs beetle jail. which is better at catching shb's?

+1 on the oil traps, it's the only thing I've seen that really works. Mineral oil doesn't get rancid like veg Oil does, so it lasts a lot longer.

    Cutting drawn deep frames

Can I cut drawn deep frames to fit in medium supers, or do I have to have the bottom board on the frames?
  13. Re: Is there a consensus on Screened bottom boards ?

UF put out a study that SBB hives had 14% fewer mites sitting directly beside hives with solid bottom boards. 14% isn't enough to stop mites from killing your hive, but it helps...
    No link, I was...
  14. Re: Is there a consensus on Screened bottom boards ?

I use both, I prefer SBB with the ability to add an oil tray (freeman beetle traps). It's the only thing I've found that really works against SHB. I leave them on year round, and have had 15...

  16. Re: First Spring Inspection -- Splitting next Weekend

I don't think it's illegal, it's considered a best practice, which is a long way from actually being illegal. I do know they are starting to push for re-queening every year from a certified source....

Re: Yellow Jacket Wasps and Hornet problems!

I've just started getting a yellow jacket problem, Harry, did the Alpine with Onslaught kill yellowjackets without killing your hives? Seems dangerous to me, but I'm starting to get worried....

Re: OAV treatment with sugar on the hive

I wouldn't use OAV with any food on the hive, but why are you treating at this point? If you treated in late fall, there should be few if any mites until the hive starts building up it's brood. ...

Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer Results - Users post here!

dsegrest, do what you need to do, I did, but at some point counting is a waste of time. I don't count my OAV hives. I can treat them with less effort than it is to count. So I treat on a...

    Re: It finally happened... varroa..

If you have a vaporizer and OA, you don't need anything else. They will NOT continue to multiply if you treat them, wait a week and treat them again. You kill most of those not in the capped broad...
