    Re: Queen Prices

Could be new owners but unlikely. Demand is strong, honey prices are good. raising queens is a tough business. I buy them for the same reasons as you Dunkel and so does everybody else. We want to get...

Re: I will never buy packages again.

    Matt:

Knowing that you should have changed the queens, why didn't you? The one thing in this scenario that was within your control, you chose to ignore even when your inner voice told you to do...

    Re: Queen Prices

Really? Is that for 1 or 2? I had heard more in the $170 range for larger orders.

  5. Re: Ag commissioner of Ventura county forces bee hive to move! Help needed

There is no mention of hives moving out, only that Larry moved his in on his buddies registered site. We do not know his buddy did not have his own hives at the site.

    Re: Pattie supplements

Body builders are big on casein. It is a powerful carcinogen. White coat guys like to use it to induce cancers in their lab animals and we human are big on drinking/eating it. Isch.

    Re: Over wintering hives

Sent my guy out to collect samples for nosema analysis for the last 3 short days. He collected 15-20 bees per hive times 5 hives to make up 1 sample. He opened all 4 hives per pallet but only...
  9. Re: Ag commissioner of Ventura county forces bee hive to move! Help needed

Although this has not happened to me because I am not a California resident the B.C. version of it has. Sounds like the Ag. commissioner has responded to a complaint. Legal precedents aside he needs...

Re: Hives Too Large For Almonds

    Ian

I thought about trapping pollen. I made some traps similar to the ones Lloyd Spear sells. They were so expensive to make and took so long that by the time I was finished I was sick of them and...

    Re: SUGAR

    OT:

It seems that most of the anti sugar noise comes from those who do not make a living from bees. It also appears as if they have limited experience. Any off spec sugar can be deadly to bees....

    Re: Pattie supplements

    Ian:

We feed year round. The only time we are not feeding is when bees are in southern Alberta on canola pollination. That is where we get pretty much all our honey. Our time is spent feeding,...

    Re: Pattie supplements

    Apis Maximus:

The bees work the pollen and store it in the cells as if they had collected it themselves. It looks the same even though it was placed in the cells by human hands. It is kinda cool....

    Re: Pattie supplements

    My recipe is:
    20 L water
60 kg of the finest irradiated Chinese bee pollen
    60 kg granulated sugar
10 kg soya flour just to dry the mix up.

In my experience anything less than this can damage...
  18. Re: What is the recommended varroa treatment for spring 2015?

Apivar in the late winter because it is very effective. Varroa are tired at that point. Usually bees are in top box and flying from the notch in the inner cover. When the varroa get knocked down...
  19. Re: What is the recommended varroa treatment for spring 2015?

Provincial Apiarists do not make recommendations other than to treat. There is no IPM for 2015 afaik, never has been unlikely ever will. Most guys I think in BC and Alberta are Apivar in Spring. Most...

Re: Varroa Still a Major Challenge?

Historically Ontario beekeepers have been able to maintain colonies with varroa. So recently they have somehow lost this ability. I dunno I am not convinced it is a lack of varroa control. Of ...

    Re: Royal Jelly Pricing

At that pricing you will go broke. 1 queen cell is maybe 1/3 of a gram of royal jelly. That translates to 3 accepted grafts per gram at 28 grams per ounce means you have 84 cells to harvest. This...
  22. Re: Checking the infestation level first or treating routinely against mites?

    WBVC

I treat all hives early spring before we start making up nucs with Apivar. Hopefully this is done early enough to get a full treatment period before we start making splits. If not then nucs...
  23. Re: Checking the infestation level first or treating routinely against mites?

I treat routinely as well. It is a good idea to check levels before and after treatment... to see if your treatments worked. Individual treatment of hives costs way more than the cost of blanket...
  24. Re: Replace the queen of quick and simple way : is it true?

I have tried this method but have some reservations about it. At the end of it I never know for sure if the process worked or not. Guys claim a 85% or so success rate but how do they know? I am aware...
  25. Re: How to stay focused for prolonged grafting? Music? Coffee?

I think he meant in the coming months unless of course he knows something that the rest of us don't. In southern BC along the coast where I am, in a best case scenario we can graft in early April....
