    Re: TBH Designs Wanted

Seems like, if the bees have a chance to get in to the area above the bars, they'll hang a lot of comb from inside the roof.
  2. Weed pollen season, honeyflow, and late-summer dearth

Expecting the honey flow in this area to end in a few weeks, I was pointed to weather.com's pollen count as a possible indicator. The only problem is, it's the opposite to what I might have expected....

Re: Layers of comb and honey

I just found this in my new (first year beekeeping) hive, and came here to find out more about it.

Just like in JC's picture at the top of this thread. Extra comb built on top of a full frame of...

    Bottom board diagnosis

I'm wondering what people think about what they see on the bottom board. This is from a 10-frame med. nuc, with the bees beginning to build in the second story.

    Re: Regression Question

Yeah, I did that too, with the inspection. Broke up the brood nest in two places, with frames of partially drawn comb. There were also frames of what I think was nectar, cleared out in the brood...

    Re: Regression Question

Thanks! got it. Advanced Bee Culture, by W.Z. Hutchinson. A.I. Root Company: 1918 (5th ed.). The chapter 'The Use and Abuse of Comb Foundation," is pp. 59-63 in the book (pp. 66-70 of the pdf).

    Re: Regression Question

Okay, another specific question. I've read elsewhere about how the bees can use the larger cell comb (drone comb, left-over standard size) for honey storage.

I didn't come into this intending to...

    Re: Regression Question

Meaning when you pull a frame out, you watch for a minute to see if they fill the gap?

It kind of freaks me out, the sheer mass of bees and, as you say, that they festoon together like that. So...

    Re: Regression Question

Thanks for coming into this conversation. (Dean?) The Idiot's Guide is the main book recommended in the Beekeepers Guild here in Philadelphia. I've read it closely and what you wrote there is the...

    Re: Regression Question

Thanks, Oldtimer. I've been reading your posts in other threads and I like your perspective and how you're able to share from your experience and try out new ideas.

Right now we have low temps in...

    Re: Regression Question

I'll try and measure tomorrow when the weather is sunnier and I have a chance to do a more thorough inspection. I glanced in yesterday, to see if they're drawing new comb at all, and they are but it...

    Re: Regression Question

I'm in a similar situation and after reading the same sources I have lots of questions. This new thread gives me a chance to ask:

What does it mean, "2 or 3 times"? Is that 2 or 3 waves of...

    Newbee with plans!

Got a 10-frame nuc and installed it yesterday. So I'm not a wannabee anymore, but a newbee!

I've decided to go with all mediums, foundationless, and to regress the bees to small/natural size...

    Re: Philadelphia, PA

Thanks, everyone. I installed a nuc yesterday, so now I'm not just a wannabee! A 10-frame medium, just put it down on the base and added a second medium super, foundationless, and I'll open it up...

    Re: TBH Designs Wanted

Thanks, Zonker. I'm a newbie and wide open to discussion.

One thing I heard is that sloped sides make it easier to cut the bars with comb attached on the sides, and pull them without banging...

    Re: TBH Designs Wanted

I'm planning a KTBH and used Google SketchUp to create a design for feedback here. It's a lot bigger than some, mainly because it's designed to hold medium Langstroth frames, and I'm planning to use...

    Philadelphia, PA

Starting this year, and have found a lot of help from the Philadelphia Beekeepers Guild which formed just a couple of years ago. There are other groups in counties outside the city.

    I've spent...
