Re: Ulster Observation Hive Vent Inserts

I am thinking of getting some of these one day for my OB hive. Read carefully. Some are not sized exactly and may require smaller saw holes than what is expected.

    Re: Growing Lemongrass?

I'm trying to get some started right now. We have a friend from Indonesia and she cooks with lemongrass all the time. Shrimp wrapped in lemongrass and grilled on a stick is great!

    Re: Creating a Nuc

I overwintered two hives started last year during the last week in June. Fed non stop. They filled out almost 10 deeps and I started feeding them in early Jan when they got light.

    My current new...

    Re: Scotch-Brite wipes for SHB

Works well for me. I think better than beetle blasters. Here is one after a week in a hive. This is a generic swiffer pad from the dollartree. 20034

    Re: Goldenrod?

I thought Goldenrod started a lot later, even in the North? What is the normal start date up there?
  8. Re: OK to store undrawn frames/supers outside?

I was told today, by someone keeping a few hundred hives, to stack it on end and put a piece of plywood across the top. The wax moths don't like the light and ventilation. I am spraying the comb with...

Re: Standard Sized Hive Made with Plexiglass

Those are some of the biggest bucks I have ever seen on a wall! Sorry for being off topic.

I modeled mine after one that is the same way. A little Filtered light in the day and dark at night.

    Re: Lazy susan bearing

Okay, so I am finished (minus two pieces of glass framing) and I am already seeing there is no way to easily move this thing. So I am thinking I shut the door to the small room it is located in, move...

    Re: Lazy susan bearing

You guys are funny. But, you have a point. Just trying not to have one of those uh oh moments after I get it finished. I went with a 12" circular 550lb from Lowes. I have it at the shop getting...

    Lazy susan bearing

How much weight should a lazy susan bearing be able to support? I am building a 20 frame observation hive. I am figuring 20 frames (at 5 lbs per frame) + hive = 200lbs at the most? So a 12" 500lb...
  14. Re: Queenless splits - what is best way to reintroduce to original hives?

I have combined back with newspaper. I do know a large beekeeper that just puts them on a strong hive.
  15. Re: Doesn't look violent enough to be robbing, but

How about you are entering a dearth and they are cutting down on the mouths (drone brood) to feed?

They look normal on the front of the hive. Could it be orienting flights? Mine do it everyday...

Re: HELP! Is this something concerning?

Looks like a normal group of bees hanging out on the porch. Mine do it every night. Some nights more, some nights less. The more bees in the hive and the warmer it is, the more come out.
  17. Re: second deep already being drawn after 1 day!

:D. I have before....sounds like what I did for a bit until I got to 10 hives. Now I can go to one per day if I want to.

Some of us need a lot of recreation!

    Re: 2 hives

Mike, none of mine drew much comb either this Spring, at least as much as I thought they should have. I just noticed today they had started drawing comb in every hive on unfilled frames. I started...
  19. Re: More foragers stay out overnight than you realize.

1/8" mesh works great in a pinch. I moved one early this morning for the same reason. I had the mesh on, but started seeing a quart of syrup leaving the feeder each day. Then saw the robbers going...

    Re: Queen Cage

Like maybe 3" x 1.5 x 1". Mine are that big because that is the size I had on hand. Most store bought plastic ones are even smaller. I think we are talking about the same thing.

    Re: somthing for newbs. robbing

I moved four, month old nucs to a different yard last Sat. Wow, what a difference. Now they have just forager travel and no robbing and it is quite a different scene. I still have one that I was...

Re: robber screens have bees confused?

All my small hives and nuc sized colonies wear the #8 screen across the front. In a week you will see which ones belong in there and which don't.
