  1. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

Some of my hives stand amongst grape. They do not use them...or the peaches, pears, nectarines and plums...but the wasps sure do.

    Re: extracting outdoors at night.

Your website shows a practical honey shed that you are using for extracting etc. do you no longer have access to that?

    Re: extracting outdoors at night.

Simply put a rubber mat on you floor or pond liner...we just put heavy bath towels under ours when we extract indoors. I prefer extracting in our sun room as it has a floor drain but have done it on...

Are they consuming the syrup or leaving it untouched?
  6. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

Thank you for your succinct reply. Is your "help" paid help or family help? Here the minimum wage is 10.50 with EI, CPP and vac pay on top of that. They are aiming to shift it up to $14 per hour in...

    Re: Fumagilin- B

Recently went to a lecture on nosema. Seems Fumigillin, or any other given item, doesn't do much good. Keeping hives healthy overall helps a lot.

When I have tried it many hives ignored the syrup...
  8. Re: Thoughts about keeping one full honey super on all winter

I am quite new but believe experienced beeks have said:

Don't put a Queen excluder on over winter as she may get left below the cluster.

Honey may crystallize within the comb if left on too...

    Re: Should I stop feeding?

If you are not in a good flow and put on spun wet supers will they be more likely to fill those than if there was bare foundation?

I guess I am asking if I should put wet supers back on after the...

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

I started with langs and set up a tbh just for fun and to try another system. I am wondering if it wil over winter or not. I will keep it for interest not for production.
  11. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

Those of you who are aiming to large increases how are you handling:

The cost and/or time & effort to keep up with equipment
The need for drawn comb..it seems they draw on the flow then quickly...
  12. Re: Photos of my partial sheet of foundation in deep frames -experiment

Speaking of how/where bees draw comb...I find in my hives outside is drawn last and on south facing hives west is drawn before east. Worker brood is a "ball" in the center, then nectar and pollen...
  13. Re: Photos of my partial sheet of foundation in deep frames -experiment

Do you always alternate with full sheets before the partials are fully drawn? As you acquire more fully drawn partial sheets are you culling out the full foundation frames.

Re: How to varroa treat bees in a tree?

    Thanks.

I know I have to treat varroa in my established hives and as my nucs come from those I expect I will need to treat them.

I have seen wax moth larvae on occasion but not shb.

How to varroa treat bees in a tree?

Hope I get some responses as would like to keep this group of bees going.

A swarm this June chose a large tree on our property as their new home.

I sealed off the entrances by securely stapling...

    Re: Dead queen, super bummed

If it is common for bees to supercede a new mated Queen is it worth checking once a week to remove Queen Cells? Will they eventually just give up and accept the Queen given them?

Are there no cappings at all with this?
Someone reviewed it last year and didn't have as good a result as you. They had real problems with it clogging.
After your experience I may give it a try:)
