    Re: Documenting Individual Hives

The logger's crayons- terrific idea! Weatherproof and at the end of the season you can easily remove it.

    Re: No drown top feeders

You must use some sort of small floating pieces of material to cover the syrup to prevent drowning. I cut up sheets of thin packing foam (the 1/8" thick stuff), cut up into 1/2" squares and spread...

Re: What is wrong with this honey?

With a small knife blade you could have taken a sample of the white substance and crushed it to see if it was crystalline and also if it dissolves in a drop of water- both signs of harmless sugar.

    Re: Brand new Beekeeper

Calm down. Just calm down. Get a grip on yourself. Tomorrow morning when it's still cool (under 50 degrees), gently and slowly lift the top covers and put your other four frames in the box, two on...

    Re: New hive, not feeding

My new package bees have shown no interest in a top feeder and only slight interest in an entrance feeder; what they do like is a remote feeder forty feet from the hive. They are being served a 1:1...

Re: Sulfur water for making syrup?

With the price of bottled water so cheap, I wouldn't take any chances. No telling what the honey might smell like so it's just not worth it.
  9. Re: I've managed to get beeswax over multiple kitchen utensils

I spent $20 at the local mission/used furniture store and bought all of the wax processing equipment that will ever need. There's a lot of good stuff at these stores and you won't have any kitchen...

    Re: Feeder Question

My girls have no interest whatsoever in a top feeder at this time of year; they are busy satisfying their needs from sources outside of the hive. You find that your bees may not want the feeder...

Re: Cutting deeps to medium or shallow?

You can cut any size in half with a table saw but only one half will have the recess for the frames.

Re: Keeping Hives Under Solar Panels

There's essentially no reflection off of solar panels; the function of the solar panel is to absorb as much sunlight as possible and minimize reflection. Rain will quickly wash off any bee residue...

5 gallon buckets- Home Depot or food grade?

Where does everyone get their honey processing buckets and are they food grade or simply Home Depot grade?

Us Plastics has food grade buckets but they aren't cheap.

    Re: leak proofing tray feeders

I simply buy plastic food containers at WalMart and cut them down to fit. Very cheap and will never lead.

I swapped out my moldy covers with clean ones and gave the moldy covers a generous wash with bleach; once they are dry in my attic and there's no bleach odor, they will be ready for another...

    Re: Double Walled Insulated Hive

I simply strap/bungee cord pieces of 1" foam board on the outside of the boxes and it will be removed in a week or so. I do not want insulation once warm weather arrives. It may not look pretty but...

    Re: Deadout Autopsy

You may be able to take a sample to your local county extension service or whatever it's called in your area; they would have a microscope that will tell whether it's just a form of sugar/honey...

Re: Microscopes? Useful? and what to buy?

I use a common garden variety B&L stereo scope with 15x eyepieces and 0.7 to 3x zoom (10.5-45x), top lighted; it serves all of my needs very well. Since I haven't had a need to get to cellular...
