  1. Re: Where to buy bees near northeast Mississippi?

Not sure about the hauling distance but one benefit to Quietman's bees will be that they're locally raised.

Re: My Mating Nuc pics in progress

Any worries of the bees, or queen, walking around the dividers near the top (i.e. Where the frame top ends rest on the hive body, the frame rests)? There seems to be a gap between the dividers and...

Re: Mouse in hive, now what?

I second what Vance said. You could also throw a mouse trap, or two, on or near the landing board (entrance). He will likely come out on the warmer days, hopefully lured by some fresh cheddar. :D

Re: When to buy a breeder?

Sounds like you are doing well. I say keep rolling with what you got unless you are just wanting to inject something new. Good job!

    Re: Upset/Disappointed/Confused/etc.

Thanks for the sarcastic input, GusK. I guess this means we are both "newbies" since this is my fourth year keeping bees. I understand that TF is not the answer to all things. It was just something...

    Re: Upset/Disappointed/Confused/etc.

Thanks squarepeg and Talon. I will check for those tomorrow. But there were no bees emerging or even stuck on any of the frames. No brood in any stage.

    Re: Upset/Disappointed/Confused/etc.

I understand that mites are a huge factor. My concern, as stated by someone else, if it were mites would I not find brood in various stages remaining in the hive? And more dead bees on the bottom...

    Re: Upset/Disappointed/Confused/etc.

I have my entrances reduced on all of my hives. Normally when I have had a hive robbed out I will see signs of chewed comb where they are opening up the honey stores. I saw none of that. These two...

    Upset/Disappointed/Confused/etc.

I lost two more hives, three total, this fall. All seem to have the same end result...vanished. A couple of months ago I had a strong single deep nuc started from a swarm. They were building up and...

  12. Re: Move small hives to nuc's for winter?

I have done it...with success. I like the vertical movement better than the side to side for winter clusters. I like to center the brood/pollen frames with honey/nectar on the outside.

    Re: clover planting

Clover is a "hard shell" seed. We "frost seed" it here in January or February as an over seed. In our pastures we just broadcast it during those months. If it snows on it then the better it is for...

Re: Price of Nucs in your area ?

I just sold some last week for $120 each. The buyers brought their own boxes and I placed one honey and three to four heavy brood frames in them. Local queens with some that were overwintered.

Re: Best Way to Make More Bees?

If at all possible, buy another hive. That way you will have resources to split and you will also have something to compare each to before it's too late.

    Honey quantity???

I can't find the answer so I am gonna ask it. What is the general "rule of thumb" on how much honey should be expected from a shallow, medium, and deep? Not sure that it matters but this will be...

Re: A couple of Newbie questions

Everything they said plus.... The round hole in the center of the inner cover is also used by some for feeding. An inverted jar of sugar water is placed over the hole where the bees can access it....

    Re: Honey in brood boxes

There should be honey in your brood box. It will normally be on the outside few frames and around the edges of your brood frames. Three queen cells may be an issue though. If the bees weren't given...

Re: Queen cell cups! Leave be or split?

I agree with JW. Those cells have already hatched. Don't expect to find any eggs for at least another couple weeks. The new virgin queen will need to get mated and return before laying eggs.
