Re: Short news report of bees in Africa

Sounds like the beginning of a SyFy Channel movie. First Africa, and then...the World! [evil laugh]

Seriously though, sounds good to me. South America seems to have acclimated to working...

Re: To use or not to use a QUEEN EXLCUDER

If you decide to use a queen excluder, you add it when you install your first super. It always stays between your hive bodies and the lowest super. Piece of cake!

Remember to check it out as you...

Re: Lost half my hives today

What an awful turn of events, and I'm glad no lives were lost and that your friend's home was spared.

Sadly if you did not have insurance and your friend did not have insurance, I'm not...
  4. Re: Why I have never lost an over-wintered hive

That's...brilliant, actually. Wow. Gonna have to give that one a try.

    Re: Online Master Beekeeper course

Don't get stuck on what kind of paper you get. The little disassociated bits of info you can pick up here and at other places on the internet are quite useful in the aggregate; but there IS value in...

    Re: Kelley vs Dadant smoker

I recently bought one of the ML smokers with the PVC bellows and I'll second funwithbees' opinion. Great action and output, I wouldn't use anything else.

The firebox is a firebox; it seems as...

Re: Management changes for flow hive

Going from the way the advertisement demonstrates the product, I'd hazard management goes something like this: Establish a new colony in the usual way (or use an established colony); add Flow at the...

Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

No. Those are things that people who are very excited about new ideas that are met with skepticism like to claim were said about heavier than air flight, or automobiles, televisions and other...

Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Are you sure? I had gotten the impression from the website that certain amounts of money were getting you some actual products, not just discounts on future product purchases. I could be 100% wrong...

Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

I'm not sure why you'd want to bother using only 4 or 5 in a deep; since you don't need to handle them very much, you wouldn't really save any kind of labor by shorting the super and having to fill...

Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

It is definitely an interesting invention. I'm very happy that these folks' 10 years of work on a piece of beekeeping equipment has made them over a half a million dollars in a matter of an hour or...

Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

Hmm. I've heard of a "Michael Bush"; I believe he posts on that internet forum I read a lot. Never actually met him...

The mechanics of the device as described sound pretty credible. But I'm...

Re: Extractor-less honey by- "Honey Flow"

    :D :D :D

JDMoodie is right; I wouldn't expect too many bees inside of capped honey. Most if not all of the Organic™ bee parts that have ended up in my honey after extraction are from the few bees...

    Re: Growl???

In fairness, the video looks to have been taken with a cell phone camera or something; it's possible the video's growl sounds different because the microphone couldn't pick up all of the sound - much...

    Re: Growl???

At the thread to which angel links, there's a video of the bees apparently "growling". It certainly sounds like an animal noise and not some kind of wind effect - to me at least.

    Re: Growl???

If you've taken apart the hive and confirmed there's nothing in there, and it continues to growl, I'm really at a loss for what to recommend. A clergymember from your favorite religion, perhaps.
  19. Re: Zombee research project at San Francisco State University

How did you think this up? It's the craziest idea for a research project I've ever heard; I wish I had thought of it.

  20. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

Natural selection isn't a discrete process that can be "undermined". Evolution is a completely random process; predators do not intentionally evolve specifically to take advantage of any condition,...
  21. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

Bees that might need treatment to overcome particularly bad infections or infestations aren't "sickly"; bees have more genes than the ones which leave them susceptible to certain stressors, and those...
  22. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

Currently it's the latter; however, it can become the former, if the processes and techniques which led to food being so plentiful and available are rolled back or restricted too much.

  23. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

I haven't heard a news story claiming any kind of food shortage in...I can't remember. Years and years on top of years and years. There are some years in which...

  25. Re: papers provide conclusive evidence that the pesticides are causing the mass death

Everything is a chemical, or a combination of chemicals. Every single thing. Pure water is a chemical.

And even the most synthesized, processed, artificial substance in the world is at its base...
