I use the sundance bottom traps. drawer opens on front.
bees are fairly quick to adapt to it compared to what others have said about
    the top sundance.
Downside from what others have said is pollen...

I wonder who'll be the head men in charge of all those hives?
    That's alot of bee hives.
Maybe some of the guys they're buying out?
Know anyone who's sold the operation lately?

  11. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

I'm glad you remembered that you saw the queen. In this case I'd leave the hive alone for now. It does sound like supercedure if the qcells were capped and the queen was still in the hive. If they...
  12. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

there are a lot of variables that come into play when temporarily splitting such as equipment on hand, time of year, age of queen in hive, workload and most important location.
    M Bush has a good...

  14. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

If those are supercedure cells it is very likely the queen is in the hive and there are some eggs still in the comb. But 6 Qcells is alot for supercedure, most times there are fewer Qcells and mostly...
  15. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

there's no mention of backfilling or not. overcrowding swarms issue anytime, mainly July and August here.
Not enough information to determine if supercedure or swarm cells. I go with my experience...

    how are you so sure?
  17. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

yup. and that frame w/ eggs on it from one of your other hives could be put in on any day up until you you go on vaca.
(probably could put it in tonight as they know when they are queenless pretty...
  18. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

well don't sweat it. there is plenty of time to make adjustments. keep me up
  19. Re: first inspection in 10 days.... here is what I found and did... close call.

are you sure that hive hasn't already swarmed? and they were depending on those cells for a new queen?
you saw open brood, did you see eggs or day old larvae? did you see the queen?
  20. Re: Uncapped Honey (Green Honey) along with Capped Honey on a frame extract or not?

    sure. many have.
  21. Re: Uncapped Honey (Green Honey) along with Capped Honey on a frame extract or not?

The instructor is correct. Ripe honey won't shake lose, unripe nectar will.
Some frames never get fully capped especially at the end of the flow.

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

I'd say just beginning here. Bees are slow to draw comb, taking notice of me & buzzing me in the yards, and visiting ornamentals that have no nectar or pollen value. Might be some value in privet,...
