  1. Re: Converting 10 frame supers to 8 frame supers

My 8 framers have enough room to jam a 9th frame in tightly (13 3/4"outside dimension) and the supers being 5/8" ply have an extra 1/4" inside. I space mine in the supers by eye (8) and I get some...

It was to get to the real point which is that varroa and SHB are fake! And the bees and their parasites are just constructs in the matrix!

Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

Bees in town are bringing in nectar, bees in the county are getting fed. I hope we get a week or so of alfalfa bloom with no rain before the first cutting, it would greatly help. The edges of the...

    Re: 2 Entrances?

I run a small top entrance, a small warm side entrance per deep, and the regular cold side (reduced after splits) bottom entrance. If they don't like an entrance they'll propolise it closed.

Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

I was reading the commercial forum and they are talking about queens not being able to mate and virgins laying. I have never heard of this. Now I'll have to inspect again in 18 days to make sure I...

Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

I painted hives and checked my split yard and 7 of them had laying queens :) Don't know how that happened. The 8th hive has 5# of bees and is queenless. I forgot my smoker so I was trying to...

Re: Front Range Snow & extended Swarm Advisory

Any of you guys having problems with virgin queens getting mated with all this nasty weather? The first splits I did had 100% success rate for getting a mated queen back to the hive. Then this rain...
  10. Re: Advice/tips on good nectarous plants needed

I can get two plantings of phacelia in a year around my apiary. It will yield up to 1500# of honey and up to 1000# pollen per acre. It blooms for quite a while and smells pretty good too.

    Re: Organic/treatment free beeks

I plan on treating the bulk of my TF hives this year. I want a honey crop, I don't want the lag time of brood breaks and walk away splits. After this year's splits my apiary has grown significantly...
  12. Re: Converting 10 frame supers to 8 frame supers

I had a bunch of ply I needed to get out of 'her' side of the garage so I put it to use. They've held up extremely well over the past 5 seasons. Biscuits wouldn't work for me, I thought about it...
  13. Converting 10 frame supers to 8 frame supers

I'm transitioning to all 8 frame equipment and thought I might try to convert my honey supers from 10 frame to 8 frame. Luckily I made most of them out of 5/8" ply (19/32") and used rabbets on all...

    Re: Front Range SNOW !!!

If the rains would stop I would be pretty happy. It's making for a really nice alfalfa crop but blooming alfalfa and rain don't make for a honey crop. The black locusts are ripe and the bees are...

Re: TF Taught Me A Lot

Yeah brood breaks kept my bees healthy but it sets them back at times when they need brood and new bees and I want them to be making honey. Im planning on 40-50 hives by the end of the year and am...

TF definitely taught me a lot about keeping bees. I have successfully kept TF bees and have actually expanded to a point where it's no longer practical. I've enjoyed it and now am going to go in a...

Re: When to throw in throw towel?

Definitely shake them out. Theyll leave you drawn comb that you can use when re-splitting. Don't let the laying worker wreck good comb on top of everything else.

  20. Re: Why I decided to buy my equipment, instead of build it.

I've only ever built/used migratory tops/bottoms. No SHB here thank goodness. The covers I make can be slid back for a top entrance if needed without opening the box up to the elements.

Re: How many bee hives do you have?

Hobbyist. 20 coming out of winter, split and caught swarms from my own hives, up to 36-40 hives now all queenright and doing good.
  25. Re: Why I decided to buy my equipment, instead of build it.

I built 800+ frames over the winter and over 30 eight frame boxes. I'm out of boxes and I have 3 frames left. I had 12 extra 10 frame top covers/bottom boards. I had to rip them to 13 3/4" to fit...
