I never even thought to look there, thanks!
Baha, that is awesome! I did buy a hat, but actually made the veil part myself with some tull I had lying around. I got the gloves off ebay for around 10 bucks, so not too bad there. I was doing what...
That does make sense, I suppose last year, they were a newer hive, and I rarely messed with them, and when I did, it was very minimal. I have never used a smoker, but think it time to invest in one,...
Thanks for the tips! I will plan on doing this on Sat. Would do it sooner, but work all week. I have one more question though, I have been watching videos, and it seems all the videos I watch, there...
I did not use a smoker at all, I think I was still expecting them to be like last year, they were so docile that I would open them up with just a tank top on, and they hardly even took notice of me....
I opened up the hive on Saturday, around midday (2pmish). So for the rest of the day on Saturday, and all day yesterday, Sunday. I am at work today, so I do not know how they are behaving so far...
Hello all,
This might be lengthy, but please bear with me, I need advice!
This is my second year with my top bar hive. Got my first 3lbs package last year, and had a wonderful summer watching...
Ok, I think I will do that, we have had a few nights where it is close to or right at freezing.....granted it is only a few nights out of the whole winter.....I am hoping they make it through, thanks!
Hi all,
I tried to search for this, but could not find the answer I am looking for!
I started a new hive this spring, and they have only filled half of my top bar hive. My question is should I...
Thanks, my hive has about 14 bars with comb now, I just found it strange that the small start of the 15th bar that I saw in July was still there, and the same size, now....I think I might open it up...
Hi all,
I had to unexpectedly go out of town for a few months, so my hive has been own their own since the end of July. I am now back, (well, about 2 weeks ago). I took a look in the window of...
Hi all,
Once more here is a newbie with questions!
So about 2 weeks ago I was worried about my hive slowing down comb building, and got some suggestions from you guys, a few being maybe try to...
Thanks everyone, I did set up my little feeder about 6 feet away from the hive last evening. They did not seem to be interested at all, and this morning, the same, none are even touching it! They...
So I guess I need to set out my feeder this afternoon. If I do not see them using it within a day or so, can I assume that they are foraging on their own well enough? And also, if they are fed with...
This is my 1st year, so please don't mind my novice questions!
I installed my 3# package into my top bar hive on May 25. By May 31, they had 4 bars that were about halfway drawn, and this is when I...
Thanks so much Garden Angel and Adam, like I said, I am a first year here, and learning as I go being that I have no one close that can guide me. I may go in this afternoon and more them forward a...
I looked inside my window yesterday, and it seems they are building all the combs in the middle of the hive? I have an end entrance, and the combs start around the 8th or 9th bar back. Is this ok?...
Thanks everyone for your replies, I decided to go ahead and remove the board completely a few days ago. They seem to be doing well, they have around 8 bars going now with comb on them, so I am hoping...
That sounds like a great idea, I will try that once they get to that point, Thanks!
I do not currently have any spacers in my hive. I have seen a lot of sites that mention spacers. My bars are all one size, 1 1/2 bars. I have now also started seeing where most people have different...
Thanks everyone, I had read that once you remove the false back, if they have built comb close to the board, about bar 10 or further back, that you should move the brood nest closer to the front,...
Anybody???
Hi all,
I just installed my first 3# package of bees last Weds. They have released the queen, and seem to be doing well with building comb. I have a false back installed currently, at the 12th...
I am using a small quart chicken water feeder, and use glass beads to keep the bees from drowning.....I don't think it would be leaking, but I will check just to make sure! Thanks everyone!
Hope this pic works, this is my top bar hive we built ourselves, just installed my first bees in it yesterday. It seems like they are doing well, I am a novice, so I hope I learn a lot on this forum!...
