    Re: Devastated...

Battery power will work too- once a week or so you carry the battery to an outlet, charge it up, and bring it back. If it's real far I suppose you could swap it with the one in your vehicle, but...
  2. Re: My 9-year-old retrieving rather large swarm - takes hit to forehead

You might find some use for either a silicone pot scraper or one of the plastic spreaders that come with a can of Bondo.

If your guy was involved with 4-H and the CPS folks tried to intervene a...

    Re: 3D printed beekeeping tools

Are media suitable for constructing models for investment casting (typically wax) available for these printers? If so converting the model to metals with reasonable melting points is fairly easy. ...

Re: Anybody know what these are?

Two aluminum z-bars with a piece of aluminum flat riding in it? I doubt that you will find it in your local Home Depot, but a specialty metals house would be able to get it for you.

Shellac and water don't do well together. Shellac is a nice finish but needs to stay indoors.
    have fun with your project.

Re: -40 f windchill in central NY

-1 F now, here in central Pa. Due to lose a couple more before dawn. Going all the way to +15 F or so tomorrow. Then a little warmer and a bit of snow.

    Enjoy the global warming folks-

  9. Re: How do you start a new package of bees with no foundation?

Only the strictest of purists would criticize you if you put foundation in that first box. Then when you have some drawn comb you can use it to suggest to the bees how further frames should be...

    Re: Maintaining Copper Hive Top

Something like automotive clear-coat might work to maintain the color after you polish it. Might be available in spray cans but I don't know. A good auto body shop might be the best place to ask....

    Re: Just my Opinion

If extracting is the only thing keeping you from langs, you can use foundationless frames in a lang, cut out the comb and crush and strain it. I agree though that there is an attraction to top bar...

OK I'll be the up side. When your overwintered hive booms in the spring and you split it to avoid swarming you'll have six.

    Re: Getting the kids interested

Yes buy the suit- it's a lot easier to be a brave knight if you believe in your armor. Don't press too much, let your children lead you to their interests.

    Re: Snow

Here in the Northeast I here that solar warming now exceeds radiative cooling so there is hope. Of course that also puts energy in the atmosphere and allows storms to form so it snows more.

  16. Re: What is the big attraction of pine saw dust??

If they are more interested in the used sawdust in the stalls than fresh sawdust, in whatever bin it may reside, they may be harvesting minerals from the animal urine in the used sawdust.

Re: Smoker stuck closed - solution to avoid?

Bar soap or liquid dish soap makes the bottom of the pot easier to clean when you cook over an open fire. Perhaps soap in the joint of the smoker will help.

Re: Feeding feral bees for a future trapout

Why wouldn't you connect the trap now? If the bees become accustomed to the trap enough that they move the guards to the entrance of the trap you could feed syrup in the trap without as much robbing...

    Re: Aronia berries

Gurney's has them, $19.99 for each potted plant. Probably not the place to go if you want to plant an acre, but if you just want one or two... What I've bought from them has always been good.
