  1. Re: trying to become beekeeper with feral bees in tampa fl

Dump the bees from the flower pot into a hive box.
  2. Re: Whats the best way to straighten plastic foundation?

I haven't had any plastic foundation long enough to have a warping problem, but my next step is to throw the plastic away and go foundationless with the empty frames.
  3. Re: Is it safe to combine a very weak queen right nuc

If they haven't been queenless long enough to have laying workers, you may want to try putting in a frame of very young brood.

Re: Screened bottom or solid ?

Piedmont NC is probably a little different. I put election signs in the Freeman type bottom boards for the winter and trays for the summer. I hate to block the airflow, but not as much as I hate...

    Re: New emerging bees...

Emerging bees are much better than children. The first thing they do after emerging is clean up their room (cell).

    Re: Bee Behavior

Getting stung by a bee who was stuck in your hair does not indicate aggressive behavior. Someone with long hair should wear a veil or at least a bathing cap to protect the bees.
  9. Re: How many nurse bees does it take to make a queen cell?

I am a big fan of Michael Bush, but I think he learned his math from another person of the same last name. I think you did too.

  12. Re: Pamphlets handed out at work - What does Bayer have to do with bees?

Hard to read, but the "Bayer" name says it all. They are famous for spreading poison and selling the beekeeping chemicals.

    Re: April splits

I put 3 queen cells in a castle and it is boiling over with bees coming out of all sections. Saturday (tomorrow) is my 3 week date for looking. It is supposed to rain so I may have to wait a day...

    Re: "Permanent" wood coating

Where do you buy it. I don't really want it for my beehives but I have some buildings with leaking metal roofs, that are going to cost a fortune to fix. This might be an option.

    Re: Nuc Install Opinions?

On the occasions (only 3) when I have bought nucs, they were installed in my hive bodies before I brought them home. If you got a fair deal on a nuc, it is already at its max for the box it's in....

    Re: Varroa already?

It only has to be 37 degrees to treat with OAV. You should probably go ahead and do a full course. 3 times over at least 21 days. That way you will get the phoretic mites now and the ones that...

    Re: Thwarting a Swarm

If they have already made up their minds, they are probably going to swarm no matter what you do. But you could try a "Snellgrove" board. They are easy to make.

    Re: Queen mating question.

The bees do not mate in the hive. The drones will usually fly about 1 mile to a DCA. The queen may go 3 miles to a further away DCA.
  23. Re: Spring time...one thing I didn't see coming- is this an annual event??

Last year at the NC summer meeting, the late Dr. Ambrose recommended using sugar water instead of smoke. I had to try it. The bees were not amused.

  25. Re: how do I make honey syrup with which to spray package bees?

Feeding honey that may have nosema spores to your bees is not a good idea.
