I could not find a link to the actual paper, but when I.see a term like "....turns on detoxification genes", I am not going to read any further.

Re: How long do most neew beekeepers keep at it?

By your handle I assume that you are into home brewing. How many people do you know that got into brewing and gave up after a year or so? I think it is similar to beekeeping. I have helped several...

    Re: burnt honey

Osmatic pressure is measured in units of atmospheres and is as based on the ideal gas law. See here: http://www.chemteam.info/Solutions/Osmosis-Equation.html

If you look at the equation (and...

    Re: burnt honey

The first paragraph is incorrect. Osmosis is not caused by hygroscopic conditions of a material. You can have the classic high school experiment of two salt solutions of different concentrations...

Osmosis is the word you are looking for. From the paper the Radar cited:

High antimicrobial activity is as a result of osmotic effect, acidity, hydrogen peroxide and phytochemical...

Re: How long do most neew beekeepers keep at it?

Free honey. I thought that once and I think a lot of new people do. I don't want to start another discussion about how cheap beekeeping is (less than a dime one guy on this site claims). But when I...

    Re: burnt honey

But that is not due to honey being hygroscopic. That is what you and Ace are getting wrong.

    Re: burnt honey

Hygroscopic is not a property that protects honey. As others have said in this thread, if honey is absorbs enough water from the air it can ferment and bacteria can grow in it.

    I believe that...

Ah Ace, You got that completely backwards. Hygroscopic means the material absorbs moisture from the atmosphere.

Re: How long do most neew beekeepers keep at it?

The 2 to 3 year mark is definitely biggest hurdle. Like many noobs, I started out with one hive and of course beginners luck got me through the first winter. Then I bought a nuc the that spring and...

Re: These are yellow jackets right? Pictures.

About this time last year I poured a little gasoline down a nest hole and then stuck an M-80 in there. I find it hugely satisfying to destroy yellow jacket nests in the most violent way possible.
  15. Re: Best smoker fuel I have ever found, what do you use?

There is a lot of ditch weed growing by the the railroad tracks near where I live. I may to try it some time.
  16. Re: Best smoker fuel I have ever found, what do you use?

I have a pallet of BBQ pellets in my garage. They work really well,

Re: Why do people have top bar hives?

To add to that, a lot of people who are new to the hobby with a "save the bees!" attitude think that all of the existing beekeepers are doing it wrong and that is why the bees are dying. Maybe they...

Re: It's going to get hot

A screened bottom board gives plenty of air flow and circulation. I don't see why you want to remove it. That isn't going to help any.
