    Re: Drones chasing birds

I've got a foot long RC helicopter that I fly within about 100' of my hives. Drones always chase it.
    Don't fly there anymore.
I don't think they chase Martins simply due to the fact they are...

Re: How late is to late?

I'm not currently feeding my girls. They are bringing in lots of pollen and nectar...in fact I'm a little worried about the backfilling crowding out the queen's laying. Its all started early this...

Re: Feeding Syrup in Communal Feeders

During late summer, early fall I open feed using an inverted 5 gallon bucket...a good ways from my hives.
    Never had any issues.
    Gone in 3 days!

Re: Hi from Wake Forest, NC

I have only had 2 issues...beetles and mites. Beetles I don't worry about...even though in the heat of the Summer, I can watch them fly straight into the entrance. I keep my hives in full sun and...

Re: Hi from Wake Forest, NC

I bought a couple of Russian Nucs from Ray Revis in Morgonton, NC a couple of years ago. They do fine here (not far from you). However, they are more prone to swarming due to explosive expansion in...

    Re: December in Southern VA

    I'm in Northern NC.
There is a lot in bloom...even my blueberries are blooming.
The girls are really bringing in the pollen.
    This can't be good.

    Re: Bottling Crystallized Honey

This year I only got 11 gallons of honey...strange summer.
I extracted and bottled it all ... a 2 day delay in a 5 gallon bucket before bottling.
It all crystallized within 2 months. Not sure why....

    Re: HArvesting honey

My bees always start of in the Spring by backfilling the brood box. This will be their honey to get them thru the times when nothing is in bloom this Summer. They eventually start filling the...

Re: Two new hives, one is in trouble

I don't see much larvae or capped brood, but I do see a lot of eggs in several of your pictures. Having just come off the Flow, make sure your queen has plenty of room to lay (open cells), keep an...

Re: How's the flow going for you?

I never get much from clover...most of the fields near me are tobacco. The flow around here consists of poplar and blackberry for the most part. As soon as they dwindle, the bees start consuming...

    Re: Dealing with Japanese Hornets

    They are European Hornets.
I've seen them hover near the entrance of my hive, grab a bee out of mid-air, take it into a nearby tree and devour it.
When I see them I take a tennis racket with me and...

Re: Not sure what bush this is

    Not Mtn. Laurel.
Laurel has a small cup-shaped bloom.

Re: How's the flow going for you?

    An update...
The Flow is over...hives gaining very little weight.
I weigh my hives and based on last years Flow, this harvest will be about 50% less than last year's.
    Bummer.

    Re: Full nuc

I'm using all drawn frames, so I guess the procedure would be the same. Just seems to me they will backfill the new brood box before filling the super.
I'll give your suggestion a try.

  25. Re: What flowers are supplying the polen in NC now? (northwest Piedmont)

Hard to believe they're finding anything with the cold temps and frosts we've had lately. Mine are bringing it in as well.
