Re: Bees swarm 4 days after installation.

Did you have a follower board installed in the long lang? Most often if there is too much space the bees will bug out.

    Cut out vac question.....

It is known that bees release an alarm pheromone when needed. I know it smells like bananas.
I noticed that during cut outs, the exhaust from my vac smells like it. My vac is roughly 20' away from...

    Water storage question......

When bees drink water and bring it back to the hive, where do they store it? What part of the comb... lower below brood upper above? Or do the bees drink it right away from the cells?
    It's...

    Re: Caught very 1st swarm

Bees will draw on anything when they feel the need to. I use wood frames with plastic foundation for the honey supers. It's all fun and games until you get a blow out in the extractor.

    Re: Plastic frame rant

I am not a fan of the all plastic frames. They seem shorter length wise and sometimes fall of the rests. That's a pain in itself. Also there are too many areas for SHB to hide. Wood frames and...

    Re: New Beekeeper Cut Out

Myself, I wouldn't separate a cut out. I would rather have one strong hive than 2 weak hives. Once they get re established you can make a split or better yet, a nuc.
I have zero experience with a...

Re: When to throw in throw towel?

I also agree.... shake them out. I had one like that last year. After I shook them and when they were accepted into the other hives, I wondered why I didn't do it sooner.

    I just got NAILED!

With bee removal calls that is. I went from nothing to 6 removal calls today alone. Oh snap! I haven't even checked my email accounts yet. lol
Time to start scheduling them all in.

    Now I will...
  10. Re: Is there such a thing as too many swarms?

I have just the opposite problem. I have roughly 30 medium supers (with bottom boards, inner covers, tele tops) filled with drawn comb an NO swarms to put in them. Send some swarms my way already....

    Re: my first cutout pics

If it were my hive I'd inspect for the queen and see if she's laying and maybe remove the QE. Once a super is 75% packed with bees and stores, add another super. It's hard to tell by the picture, but...

    Re: Mow grass/weeds around hives.

Once you get to know your bees you will know what you can get away with and when. I can mow right up to the hives, weed whip with my gas weed whip and actually get on my hands and knees with my head...

    Re: First swarm trap

Since you have five frames of foundation in the top super, I'd leave it alone until you see pollen coming in on a regular basis.

    Re: Cut-out box

It's a very nice looking box with a lot of thought put into it.
As far as using it for a cutout? It may be a bit too small unless it's not and established hive. Most removals end up filling a ten...

    Re: New Beekeeper Cut Out

It wouldn't hurt to add a couple of frames of stores once they get established in the hive. You just have to make sure they have enough to over winter on.

Re: Medium or deep over brood ?

    1. Bridge comb is built between bottom and top frames. Pull it apart and remove it to avoid squishing the queen.
    2. If the frames look about 70% loaded with bees then it's time for another super....

Walk away. The "siding" and the home for that matter is in such a state of dis repair that anything you do is going to cause more damage. Friend or not, you will end up repairing what is damaged....
  23. Re: Inner Cover Vent/Telescoping Top - When to Open

  25. Re: MANY, MANY Swarms this year. Would you agree?

Haven't had one call yet this season. Last year we had 3. The year before 12. My hope is that the trend does not continue.
