    Re: catching and selling swarms

I caught a swarm this year, probably from one of my hives. I ended up keeping it for 3 weeks or so and letting it build out 4 or 5 frames. Once they were working on drawing and filling out the 5th, I...
  2. Re: overwintering with or without screen bottom boards ?

Both my hives here in Western NY made it through the winter fine with just the SBB. They are only 1 cinder block off the ground though.

Re: Need input on hive Setup!

2 deeps is cheaper than 3 mediums by a couple dollars (at least where I buy my stuff). It is what most people use around me, so that's just what I went with.

You made a good decision putting that...

Re: Need input on hive Setup!

I'm semi-close to you (30 miles south of Rochester NY). I have popped the top cover a couple times this year to take a quick peek, but haven't done a full inspection yet. I believe most people around...

Re: Newbie....Should I buy this hive?

I would probably get them. I didn't get a whole lot out of the beekeeping classes I took, but it put me in touch with local people that can help if I do have a problem that requires someone else to...

    semi-urban hive in shade

    Quick background....

I live in a semi-urban area. I started beekeeping last year with 2 hives at my parents house, which is 50 minutes away, out in the country. It looks like both hives have made...

    Re: Supercedure cell?

A quick update for this thread. I inspected my hives again this past weekend. I didn't see that supercedure cell when I checked all the frames. I did see eggs again, so I know a queen is (or was...

Re: Automatic Supersedure of 1st-year Colonies

Thanks for the info. A question for you (or anyone).

Is it common for hives from nucs to supercede a month or two after installing them? What about if they have first year queens?

    Re: Supercedure cell?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll check on them in a couple days and see what I find. I would rather them not swarm, but they'll do their thing.

    Re: Supercedure cell?

She does have a strong laying pattern. The picture below shows the brood pattern from when I installed the nuc. The pattern is the same now though. They shouldn't be swarming because they have plenty...

    Re: Supercedure cell?

I looked through 16 or so frames, and this was the only one I saw. I'll let them do their thing even if they want to supercede her.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Supercedure cell?

First year beek here with 2 hives that came from nucs. I inspected my 6 week old hives this morning. They are doing their thing and everything has been going well. I've found the queen or eggs every...

    Re: first skunk trapped

Skunks don't just go around spraying everything they see. Throw a tarp over the cage slowly and lift it up. Provided you do things slowly, they won't usually spray.
  14. Re: How many Hives needed for sustainable apiary?

Saltwater corals can easily pay for the hobby of keeping fish tanks. Some corals that are 1" can sell for $100+. Raising certain fish, like clownfish, can pay for the hobby too.

    Re: first skunk trapped

I've trapped skunks, woodchucks, feral cats, etc. Dry cat food and a bit of bacon grease will attract them very well. Dry cat food doesn't really smell all that much by itself. The bacon grease...
  16. Re: Keeping old comb and burrs, is it worth it?

I'm a first year beak, but I save all the burr comb. In my 5 gallon bucket that I take with me, I include a Tupperware container. When I get home, I put the comb I've collected into a bigger...

Re: Got a Visit from the Bee Inspector.

I wouldn't consider two years to be a success. Nobody is saying bees won't survive for a couple years without treatments.

    Re: Is CCD a myth?

What about feral hives? Those numbers are only hives that beekeepers have, right?

    Re: Organic?

99.9% of honey probably isn't organic. If you owned enough acreage, or knew that nobody within a few miles of you were spraying pesticides, your honey would be organic though, right?
  21. Re: First Inspection Concerns (aka New Parent Syndrome)

I was nervous and didn't know what to really look for either. I'm only about 3 weeks into this, so take my experience with a grain of salt, but that frame looks pretty good. Eggs are tough to spot. I...

    Re: Registering Hives

Try Monroe County, NY. We have the highest property tax rate (% of home value) in the entire nation.

I don't really like the idea of mandatory registration for most things including beehives,...

Re: Went bare handed last night - got stung

This is my first year beekeeping, but I read that smoking your hands first will mask some other smells. It's worked so far, I haven't been stung yet.

    Re: cataracts

This is interesting. I don't have cataracts, so I can't really comment on that. However, I do wear glasses and contacts. If I wear my contacts for more than 8 or 9 hours, the next day my eyes are...
