    Re: Sugar shake container

Thanks for your ideas! They all sound good. Wasn't sure about the cornstarch. There seems to be varying ideas on whether it harms them, so glad to hear a different perspective.

    Sugar shake container

Was wondering what some of you use for containers when you sugar shake your bees to prevent varroa. I can't seem to find a container that will "dust" them, not "douse" them with powdered sugar. ...

    Strange buzzing in hive...

For the last two evenings, when I've gone out to check one of my new hives (hived on 5/13), I've noticed an unusual, loud hum coming from the hive, with a few "squeal" kinds of sounds intermittently....

I'm a 2nd year beekeeper. I use the jacket with attached mesh hood. I wear a baseball cap to keep the hood in place better. During "honey" season last year, I kept getting stung through my jeans,...
  8. Frames with chrystallzed honey - ok for new pkg?

I'm a 2nd year beekeeper. I have a dead out from last winter that didn't appear to be diseased. That hive contains frames full of chrystalized honey. Can I put some of these frames in with my new...

  10. Anyone out there using one deep hive body with the rest mediums?

This is my first year beekeeping. When I started out, I was concerned that my hubby, who has an aversion to stinging insects, would not be able to help me with some of the heavier lifting. I opted...

I live in NE Ohio and I'm considering wrapping my hives with tar paper. I've seen pro and con posts here. If I do decide to wrap, I want to make sure I do it properly, so I don't end up with an ice...

  14. Using 9-frame spacers on frames already capped

    Re: Ventilation questions...

My bees aren't quite that hot! I like the idea of popsicle sticks. I put two shims on each side of the inner cover opening to prop up the telescoping cover a bit. I also went ahead and drilled a...
