    Re: crushed queen cell

Doesn't look like it was damaged or capped yet. You should be able to get a queen out of it. I had one I damaged and the bees built emergency queen cells after tearing down the damaged one.

Re: How often to check top feeder

I start off checking a hive top feeder after two or three days and then adjust how often based on how fast they are taking syrup. Since you're not really bothering the bees by checking a hive top...

    Re: Swarm Returned to Hive!?!

I've had hives do that several times last year and this year. Usually they swarm "for real" in two or three days if the weather is nice. Watch where they cluster on the practice swarm, mine clustered...

  14. Re: Would you put an entrance above queen excluder?

I have some supers with 7/8" or 1" holes in them that have been used above excluders. Usually not a problem with robbing as the home bees will guard the opening. The hole, or shim in your case, cuts...

    Re: Mouse guard entrance reducer

A lot of people use 1/2" hardware cloth bent to form an "L" and screwed or nailed on the front. Drones can go in and out, and larger mice can't get in. Shrews and smaller mice may be able to get...

    Re: Bottom Boards

You never turn a screened bottom board over so you don't need a 3/8" side.
With the solid bottom board the bee keeper turned one side up for summer and the other side up (or reversed the board) for...

Re: Swarm hive vs. package hive

Package bees have been shaken off frames from a hive and may have lots of foragers. A swarm is mostly younger bees, especially of the wax building age since they have to build comb before eggs can be...

    Re: robbing continues, need help

May need to move your hives to different location. I haven't found that to work though with my hives, the robbers always found the hive after a day or two. Can you tell where the robbers are coming...

Re: How many bee hives do you have?

Hobbyist, started in 2011 with three hives. Presently have 24 eight frame hives and two splits in 5 frame nucs. Want to hover around 20-25 hives.

    Re: Queen Question

Continue feeding until they stop taking the syrup. They probably don't have enough foragers at this point to make a dent by foraging nectar where house bees can pull syrup. They need the syrup to...

Re: What species of honey bee did I catch?

Can't tell for sure, look like some of my mutt/mixed bees. There will be different colored workers in each hive due to the different drones the queen mated with, so it's a little hard to tell with...
