Re: Need Help! Just Inhereted 50 hives

If I were suddenly in your position, with little experience, I would do most of those things ,such as more ventilation, which have been recommended but would add the following. Immediately clean up...

    Re: Vegans don't eat honey?

Noooo.Share the fish and encourage the vegan to eat. After all, if you are in that lifeboat long enough the vegan may come in handy and you don't want a vegan who is skin and bones.

    Re: Vegans don't eat honey?

I guess I will have to redefine my personal definition of cruelty to include furnishing a home, feeding, protecting and making sure they have everything they need to live a productive life.

    Re: wiring frames

I tried it and it works. I used 20# line since that is what I had on hand. That said,I have gone back to wire because, for me, it's faster and it's permanent. You will sometimes find a piece of...

    Re: Need advice on extractor

I agree with the others that you need a larger unit and a radial. I have used the Brushy Mt 9 frame radial for over twelve years and it is still going strong. I intend to upgrade this spring to the...

Re: House Construction and my Bees

If you ask the workers if they are allergic you will find that 99.9% are "allergic".

Re: A Queen and 1 worker

This is just a wild guess but since you kept the bees warmer than the outside air,is it possible they flew out into the cold and died outside?

Re: My neighbour's bees have it in for me...

Lose the dark clothes and wear light colors. If you use any after shave , cologne, powder etc lose those too. Bees are scent oriented.
  15. Re: attn FL beeeks.,. when do you begin raising queens ?

Here in north Fl I start Feb 15th - March !st depending on the weather. You want a good flow going and plenty of drones. Our hold up is waiting for the drones. The flow is plenty early

    Re: telescoping vs migratory

Well,I looked at your links.Interesting stuff but no blown off telescoping covers. All of this is moot since with a tornado it wouldn't matter what kind of covers you had.

    Re: telescoping vs migratory

How many of those tornados hit your bee yards? A hurricane gets everyone in a wide path.
  18. Re: How to stimulate colony build up in the spring?

I think the maples are somewhat temperature dependent. Here ,in the country they have not started but those in the city of Pensacola are in full bloom. Pensacola is usually about 5-10 degrees warmer...

    Re: telescoping vs migratory

I use telescoping covers because I keep feeder inner covers on all year. These inners help to moderate our extreme heat in summer.

First, wait for spring to look for her again. When I have a queen that's difficult to find I remove one outside frame, check and set aside. Then remove the outside frame on the other side, and check...

Re: Why is my wax coming out in two colors

That should work. If you have much wax you might look for an old "crock pot" at one of the local thrift stores. I put a couple of inches of water in the bottom and melt CLEAN wax there for molding.

Re: Why is my wax coming out in two colors

Don't boil the wax. Keep it well below the boiling point of water. 150-160 degrees should allow it to flow through your filter cloth.
  24. Re: Collecting bees during the winter, in the FL panhandle, for apitherapy?

Why not set out a saucer of honey and catch some for yourself? Any warm day will do.
  25. Re: People actually make a living with honey production??

Yep. That's the only good thing I can say about them. They are almost indestructible. The telescoping tops are good for sitting full supers on in the honey house. I even had some hive bodies made of...
