Re: Caught Swarm - Next steps?

Add more frames to fill the box. Looks like they are drawing comb in the corner.
  3. Re: Which frame type to purchase for foundation-less? Groove or wedge?

Last year I used the both the Kelley F type and the Dadant wedge top (foundationless). I found that breaking off the wedge and having that straight edge worked better than the Kelley frames. The...
  4. Re: After the swarm- what to do with queen cells in original TBH?

Why not divide your TBH with more Spacer Boards? You would need to make top entrances for each division. At least put a queen cell on each end with a header dividing them.

Re: "Average" mood of a mixed hive?

From what I've read Guard Behavior is a learned response. If you agitate a docile hive you will get an aggressive response and those aggressive bees will be "Guard Bees" for the rest of their life...

    Re: Rotating brood chambers

Move the empty box to the top. Heat rises, it will be easier for the cluster to expand. I reversed my boxes in late Feb and they were filled with brood three weeks later.

Re: Need some advise, all ideas welcome

I found some queen cells that were oozing a tan colored semi-liquid. Then found a queen cell with the cap flipped open. My assumption was that the emerging queen damaged the other cells. I would...

Re: Slow start in Houston - thoughts? advice?

Try reversing your boxes, place the "empty" bottom box above the full box.

Re: Putting topbar brood in medium langs.

Hang (attach) a Lang Top Bar under your TBH top bar. Once it is drawn out add the lang sides and bottom then place in a lang box. Won't help with the drawn TBH frames now. Cutout and rubber band...

Re: yellow jackets and low egg numbers?

What do you use as a Yellow Jacket Trap Greenride???
  11. Re: How to extract single frame without extractor?

Use a large spoon and scrape comb and honey off down to your foundation. Stain through cheese cloth. One medium frame should give you about 2 pints.

Re: Moving from TBH Nuc to Lang Boxes

Cut and rubber band into frames would make a complete transition.
I thought about merging TBH into Langs by rubber banding a Lang top bar onto / under the TBH top bar and place it into a TBH. Once...

    Re: Chinese Tallow Trees

I am in SW Louisiana and went out to look several different times of day and did not see bees working the Tallow Trees.
There were a variety of blooms from just starting to bloom to finished...

Re: guess they did it for me

Then again the bees could be robbing the hive.
  16. Re: Newbee completed first hive inspection - help appreciated

Can you get a queen? The frame of eggs would give them something to work with to make a queen. There are limits to how long the package bees will be able to live and work.
  17. Re: Newbee completed first hive inspection - help appreciated

You had a marked queen in each cage. Hive number two no longer has a marked queen. If the bees released her it is unlikely they balled her. My guess is she was a virgin queen and was lost while...
  18. Re: Newbee completed first hive inspection - help appreciated

The Bee Math doesn't add up. If eggs were laid the same day you did the install. The New Queen would emerge in 16 days (+-1 day) May 31 - June 1. Worker brood 20 days (+-1 day) June 3 - June 4. It...

    Re: Foundationless question

I have been using Dadant frames with the top wedge bar broken off and left off. They actually center the comb better. I tested some frames with wax strips, but the strips were too deep and the...

    Re: Foundationless Supers

    3. You don't need special frames to go FL. Most people just flip the wedge down and go on. If you use deep FL frames, you may want to wire them for support. I do not wire mediums.

    I just broke...

Re: First swarm trapped this spring.

How did you attach the cutout combs to the top bar? I will be doing a cutout tomorrow and I have a TBH to experiment with.
