    Re: Open feeding station methods

Inverted paint cans on the top bars seems to work well. The only issue is needing to have another box to cover them, but that isn't too big of a deal. Open feeding might be easier, but you can't...

    Re: I CAUGHT A SWARM!!!

Yes, well worth the investment. But since they decided to move in on their own, chances are they'll stay unless you bother them too much early on. Popping it open and adding brood is not too much...

Re: Shaking Laying Worker "Horror" Story

Roland, I'm not sure what I'm planning to do with this hive. I've read a few places the last few days that said they may allow a cell to emerge and accept her. Which makes me wish I had cells...

Re: Shaking Laying Worker "Horror" Story

Ace, I'm talking about taking them to another beeyard I have and shaking them out a couple hundred yards from those hives. So several miles + 70 yards.

Which I mentioned a few times in the...

    Re: Strange Swarm Behavior

Absolutely, you'll lose most of the field force, back to the original colony, but the queenright split will build quickly. I'd assume you have a decent flow going, elsewise you should be careful...

    Re: Strange Swarm Behavior

That's what I would do. But if you find capped queen cells you may be without queen already. In that case I still like the idea of splitting, but you could even split by box if you want in that...

Well done, for six weeks that comb looks awful white! They should have had a round of brood and some through by now. I always wonder about people recollection of time when it relates to things that...

Re: Burt Shavitz Dead At 80

It's hard to untangle what's really happened in someone's life and a one sided documentary doesn't really paint the right picture either. But he kind of gave it up to Roxanna or whatever her name...

Robbin, I wasn't confused by your post and that was direct at Acebird who I quoted above. I can tell you read what I'd wrote and your post was a good contribution, thank you!

Re: Shaking Laying Worker "Horror" Story

    maudbid,
If there were several hives there AND an identical hive a foot a way wouldn't have been there, I bet it wouldn't have been an issue. I'm sure the LWs completely overwhelmed the defenses...

Re: Shaking Laying Worker "Horror" Story

Please read the thread, or don't. No there were not bees on the brood I added to the nuc on the 23rd. And even if there was, would they have waited well over a week to kill her off since I saw her...

Re: Burt Shavitz Dead At 80

The impression I got from the documentary is that he didn't keep bees anymore and hadn't really for a long time. I liked the show very much, it was entertaining. He was quite a character by all...

    Re: Strange Swarm Behavior

I'd go in and look for queen cells as they are probably ready to swarm and that was a practice run. If you have the boxes, find the queen and take three frames of brood with NO queen cells on them...

Re: Queen flew off when hive opened

How confident are you that it was the queen? You sure it wasn't a drone? Were they just workers and it happened quickly so you assumed the worst?
