    Re: Hive turned mean

Are you/were you in a nectar dearth? Around here (Northeast U.S.) bees become a little feisty because it's just that time of year.

We've just come out of a dearth, and we're heading into the...
  3. Re: Maxant Industries is pretty much the best company ever!

This Spring I had Jury Duty up the road from the Maxant plant. When I got out early one day, I stopped in on a lark. The folks behind the counter dropped what they were doing and took me for a tour,...

    Re: Dearth Nucs...

I find that I have good luck limiting the entrance for the nucs. I use 1/8 hardware cloth that's folded into a V with the point going into the hive. A smaller entrance will allow a smaller/weaker...

    Re: Best Gloves

I had anaphylactic reaction to a sting two years ago, so I've become a little paranoid.

I wear a pear of standard yellow dish-washing gloves under a pear of home depot chemical gloves. Stings...

    Re: queen Anne's lace

We had a drought in Eastern Massachusetts a couple of years ago, and the bees were working it. At the time, the VP of our bee club said that he'd been keeping bees for 20 years, and that was the...

Re: My recipe/method for sugar blocks

    Lauri,

With your sugar blocks, how do you deal with the bees' burr comb attaching to the meshed inner cover? Scrape/melt with a propane torch? Don't have that many issues?

    Thanks,
    Tony P.

  10. Re: Paint/Stain What do you use/How long is it lasting?

All beekeeping is local. Your environment may vary, but The Eco-Wood Treatment is junk (here in New England) and should be avoided. Boxes lasted less than 3 years before they started warping and...
  11. Re: Question for Massachusetts Beekeepers - Re: Bears

Lots of problems with bears in Middlesex County. The bear that was shot in Newton last summer messed up a bunch of hives through the county as it made its way East - all the way up to 128/95.

  12. Re: Old Brood Comb, with mold !? Can i use them for...? - (Photos attached)

I'd say yes, but will let others with more experience chime in.

I would put them outside in the sun, and flip to expose both sides.

    Cheers,

    Re: hauling out fresh pollen

Could it be old pollen by any chance? It's a protein that will break down over time, and I'm wondering if it's out with the old and in with the new?

Edited Sorry, just reread where you say they're...
  14. Re: Caught and installed swarm from my hive. Now what?

If you did put them back into the same hive, they haven't left, and you have the equipment, make a split.

Find the queen and move some frames of workers and brood (no queen cells) into a new box....

    Re: What is your hive?

All beekeeping is local. Join a local club (there must be one thereabouts, or up in Macon) and do as the Romans do.

Getting input from folks in Massachusetts, North Dakota, or Canada won't do you...
