Hello Neil,
I evaluate them by time, over wintering them without treatments, and testing with such items as paper towels soaked in oil and a trigger mechanism such menthol or thymol. You may find...
Barry,
I have heard and read, many, many people who have used FGMO, smallcell, and other approaches. If I asked for testimony from those who use smallcell, or even russians, I am sure that there...
This is a site that has many links of different topics. I thought it was worth passing along.

Eaglerock, there is a link on the site I posted above that lists hotels, etc.
Bring a boat??? Hey, whatever floats your boat will do just fine... ;)
:shhhh: There are many ways to control mites when you are constantly requeening, doing splits, etc. There are articles that touch base on such items like the "outbreeding mites" article.
ANYONE...
The yellow jackets are at the open feeders in the morning before the ice even melts off the jars. They operate in very low temps. They will walk right into the hive when bees are still in cluster....
Friday is the business meeting, an afternoon of speakers, and the evening program and banquet.
Saturday is a full day of talks.
I think both days are worth it.
PS...I am getting a boatload...
Anyone going?
Meeting is Nov. 7 and 8 in Lewisburg, Pa. Details, list of speakers, and agenda can be found at www.pastatebeekeepers.org
I'll be there both days.
I tell people who come to my place "If I get stung, go ahead and laugh. Because when you get stung, I'm going to laugh at you!".
Places that hurt...
On the small of your back.
Back of leg,...
First...lets set the record straight concerning all those comments about "How could someone prove they were your bees?", etc.
There is a legal term (Res Ipsa Loquitor) which means "Things speak...
Hey, I also parade around my beeyards naked. ;)
Geesh, this again!
Yes, Yes....I can see the light....abandoned hives from bankrupt migratory beekeepers are justification to come here and degrade beekeepers who do not use treatments. I guess...
Migratory beekeepers worried about other peoples hives is somewhat questionable. I see it at a basis for rationale and justification to attack others, and claims and reasoning to degrade others while...
Thanks Harry. I was not sure of your intent for the opening post. At least now, it's very clear.
Sorry it turns out your original post said little, and was nothing more than a vague attempt to...
Sounds to me like the foundation to all their problems to begin with. :)
Is this a reference to adding water? ;)
Seems since I was the only one that has commented, and your post follows mine, I'll feel somewhat obligated to respond.
So whats so unique about someone catching a swarm or unknown origins and...
Not sure if the thumbs down is about the swarm, or those who do not treat, or are you giving yourself the thumbs down? :s
Your asking who would be proud to have a hive like this, so apparently...
Upside....
Sitting under a shade tree at the end of the day and knowing I had a full day of production as I look out over the orchards in complete calm and nothing but the birds chirping, and the...
Random genetic variations?
Just take a few, and without smashing them, put them in some I/alcohol. Then lay them out on a white sheet of paper and take a picture, and post here. They are easily identifiable.
I do not really go by temps as much as just picking a date. I think your still good to go as bees are still capping off the fall flow. I try to stop any syrup feeding by the end of October. They may...
Pears are understandable. They are one of the lowest sugar source nectars. You would need to have nothing else available for bees to work them.
Eaglerock,
Many orchards will knock down the dandelions right before bees are brought in for pollination. It cuts down the competing flowers for the bees to work. Some say it does help.
Bees...
Dee, If I remember correctly, the problem with the vaccine was that it just made every test positive for lyme if they were bitten at a later time. So after the vaccine, there was no way to test and...
