    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

I debated about splitting the hive earlier, but with only the two hives, and at that point my other hive was just starting to rebound from going queenless, I was concerned I would screw things up and...

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

That hive is my experiment at wintering in 3 deeps. It was a strong hive last year that I put a third deep on to winter in. They made it through our brutal winter and were strong right from the get...

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

So in an orientation flight, are they primarily new bees leaving the hive for the first time? Why would an older bee that's come and gone multiple times need to re-orient?

    Re: Is this Robbing? (video)

I built a robber screen for that hive just because of the close proximity to this hive, but so far no robbing. It does have a good population in it, just not much evidence in this video. It came out...

    Is this Robbing? (video)

I'm in my 4th summer keeping bees, not an expert by any means. I'm curious about the activity on my big hive yesterday afternoon. This is much more activity than I normally see and I first thought...
  6. Re: Any reason NOT to just dump sugar on the inner cover?

You want to put in under the inner cover on top of the bars (over newspaper) so the bees are closer to it in the winter. I've had success with this method the last few years.

    Re: Queen marking

Can you mark her when she's on the frame instead of picking her up? Or will the paint not dry quickly enough?

My second planting is doing better than the first. I think we had too much rain earlier.

    Re: Bee's favorite flower

I second the buckwheat. I plant an acre or two each year and all the pollinators love it.

    Re: Bee's favorite flower

Burdock - one of a hunter's worst nightmares! Then's there's sticktight, multiflora rose, and on and on.

That's a great idea. What do you use for a heat source?

    Re: Goldenrod?

No, it's the only way to get rid of those blood thirsty skeeters! With all of our rain this year the skeeters are thick!! I'm always looking for a killing frost before deer hunting begins.
  15. Re: Best smoker fuel I have ever found, what do you use?

You mean to tell me I've been giving away free smoker fuel to be used as garden fertilizer? I've been teasing my 13yr old daughter that she needs to figure out how I can burn our two hay burners...
  16. Re: These are yellow jackets right? Pictures.

Although I employ the gasoline method to rid my 1 to 2 hives a year on my property, another good method that has worked is to wait until dark and pour Seven dust in and around the entrance hole. The...

    Summer honey harvest in Michigan?

I've always harvested honey in early fall but am wondering if I should harvest twice during the season. Anyone in Michigan care to weigh in with their experience/recommendations? I'm in SW lower...

  20. Re: Goldenrod blooming in Central to West Michigan

I pulled 7.5 gallons off my two first year nucs last night. No smell of goldenrod from either hive, but it is definitely blooming and being worked by the bees.

  22. Re: Goldenrod blooming in Central to West Michigan

Just got back from a fishing trip to the U.P. Lots of golden rod in full bloom. I was surprised to find some starting to bloom here in SW lower michigan.

  24. Re: Can you give a nuc too much honey at installation?

Thanks guys. I ended up pulling a couple frames of honey and replaced with drawn comb, and then added the second box with the two frames of honey and the rest drawn comb. The nucs look pretty...
  25. Can you give a nuc too much honey at installation?

I moved two nucs yesterday into 10 frame deeps. I gave them each 5 frames of honey that I had left from dead outs. My plan was to put a second box with drawn comb on in a couple weeks. Now I'm...
