Re: Did you stick with top bar?

Why do you say that? Are you grafting? My TBH's are SO easy to cut the queen cells out of because they make them on the edge of the comb. They are natural raised queens though, not grafted.

Re: Did you stick with top bar?

I started beekeeping with 1 TBH last year and have expanded to 3 full hives and 3 TB nuc this year, along with getting 2 more ladies started with their own TBH. My plan is to stick with all TBHs and...

    Re: What is this bush

I believe it is a euonymus. It should get little white fruits that split open to reveal red fleshy covered seeds. Privet leaves are a bit more pointy and get blue--black berries

Re: Some things I've learned about SHB

This is my first year using diatomaceous earth on the IPM board with a screened bottom board in my top bar hives. 3 hives. 2 in full sun, 1 in the shade. The one in the shade has no DE on the...

Re: How late is too late?

One of mine is in the process of making queen cells right now. I will split one hive this Sunday and make a total of 3 nucs with it. 2 will raise a new queen, and 1 will get the original queen. I...

    Re: Hybrid KTBH/Warre/Lang Nuc

This is not an operational hive. This is my display hive where I park a bar of bees or two when I introduce a queen to a long time queenless colony, or for taking to the county fair. This is NOT...

    Re: Hybrid KTBH/Warre/Lang Nuc

With all due respect Mr. Bush, do their wings not function once they get inside the hive? (I'm sure you will say it's dark and they don't fly in the dark, they crawl) Until I see it play out myself...

    Re: Hybrid KTBH/Warre/Lang Nuc

If a piece comb is all that is necessary, I think "ladder" is a bit of a misnomer. It should be called "bait".

    Re: Sugar Water Spray?

You may be opening the proverbial can of worms by asking for an alternative to smoking, but I work my top bar hives with just water and Anise oil in a spray bottle. the sugar was too sticky and...

can you take a picture of what you are talking about in regards to a bee ladder? Can't quite picture what it looks like.

Re: Queen presence in summer split?

Are the 2 hives in shade for the summer, or is there anything you can do to provide them the shade so brood rearing doesn't slow down? And are you willing to feed thin syrup to encourage comb...
  14. Re: Caterpillars on my walnut and pecan trees!

once the tent caterpillers get into the web formation, BT won't penetrate to kill them. I have a few groups in my single pecan tree that I just let go. My neighbor didn't like them in his birch and...

Re: Langstroth super on a TBH?

My double decker top bar seems strange to some, but I really want to keep working on the idea. There seems to be some interest out there in doing it. I don't feel that it is counterproductive to...

Re: Langstroth super on a TBH?

I probably have 6 total entrance holes leading to the periscope entrance. You might try yours without the queen excluder first to see if it's really needed. Can't imagine why the queen would feel...
  17. Re: I definitely understand now why the hive stands work side to side, not front to b

can you get long enough zip ties (or put 2 or 3 together) to pull the two blocks together? Otherwise, I'd suggest a ratchet strap until fall when you break things down for the winter.

Re: Langstroth super on a TBH?

Mine wasn't a true Lang, as the hive was too long but here are my pictures. I intentionally made the bee entrance on the side so they would be going in between the 2 boxes. My hive was having queen...
  19. Re: making up fall nucs for overwintering (TBH)

August is still really really hot for us. What time table would you suggest? I've got a nuc that has finally grown into a full hive with 11 drawn bars. I suppose I could just do a cut down split...
  20. making up fall nucs for overwintering (TBH)

I have seen a few articles about overwintered nucs making the best beehives come spring. I'm hoping to do some this fall and would like to avoid the learning curve by hearing from others who have...
  21. Re: hottest weather temp you safely inspect TB in?

I did not realize Oregon would get that hot. Virginia is having a hot spell, and I was in mine this morning at 9am when it was 88, just shifting bars down not really pulling them out and noticed...

    Re: Swarm leaving home

In my opinion, I'd keep them confined to the box for about 3 days, as long as they have access to the syrup feeder. What you want to get is some bars of drawn comb built and eggs in them. That...

    Re: Need input...

That is a beautiful bar of honey comb! If you are anxious for a taste, just lop off the bottom half, cut off the drone brood at the very bottom, and crush and strain. I don't have any bars of full...
  24. Re: Day 50: My TBH box is 90% full... I don't know what to do.

Michael Bush seems to think they will build faster without foundation. My only experience has been foundationless, so I can't give you any comparison. Of course, it's difficult to build up comb...
  25. Re: Workers killing drones --sign of dearth? Should I feed?

My Dad built this for me to look like a bird house to disguise it from the neighbors and also to shield the syrup from the sun. The jar is a 1/2 gallon mason jar from the hardware store, but I...
