    Re: Swarms cells? this late?

The queen cells I had were swarm cells, on the bottom of the frames. As an update, I had put a cotton ball with lemongrass oil on it on a limb of an apple tree near my hives. This morning about 1015...

    Re: Moving a hive

Put a red cover over your flashlight (red food wrap) so the bees don't see you as well. I found out the hard way not to use a head light either! Ouch!

    Re: Swarms cells? this late?

Found three cells in one of my hives also. The first two about two weeks ago. Been watching for a swarm but haven't seen or heard one yet. Earlier this week I found a third cell that was capped (the...

Re: Why do I not see Sumac yet?

Challenger--Did not have much sumac last year so not sure how much honey my bees produced from the sumac. More bloom this year but don't know how much honey I 'll get. Most of my hives are less than...

Re: Why do I not see Sumac yet?

Sumac is blooming in west Alabama, sort of sporadically. Some will bloom, some heads not close to blooming. Has been doing this for about a month with all the rain we've been getting. Walk downwind...

Sounds like the swarm is doing great. It's a lot of fun and a learning experience either way it goes. Good luck with them and keep us informed.

Re: Adding Beetle Baffles to Existing Hives??

The easiest way would be to put the baffle on a shim or slatted rack so all you have to do it take the hive off the bottom board, add the shim or rack and add the hive back on top. Without a shim you...

    Re: Late Swarm

I caught two small swarms in July or August last year. Fed them and gave them a couple frames of brood from other hives (two frames each). They made it through the winter and took off like crazy in...

    Re: hive dimensions

It has to do with "bee space" that distance where two bees can pass each other on the wall of the hive and the frame, between frames, etc. Too much space and the bees fill it with comb, too little...

Re: Okay to shake bees off frame with eggs?

Shouldn't hurt the eggs. Don't shake a frame with queen cells though, could damage the developing queen. You could gently brush them off with a bee brush if you're really worried about the eggs.

Re: Queen cell cups emptied by bee's

Could there possibly be virgin queens in them? Sometimes there are multiple queens (mother and daughters) in hives. The mother queen gets superseded or leaves with a swarm, leaving the daughter to...

    Re: New screened inner cover

Looks great! Depending on the thickness of the corner triangles, you could leave the strips out. Nothing can get into the hive through the screen--too small for hive beetles. I have had the bees...

Re: x comb from a cutout

There's nothing wrong with having mediums on top of deeps for brood. Most of my hives are like that, I have a hard time lifting 10 frame deeps anyway. You can put medium drawn frames into deeps. The...
