    Re: Color variations

The bees in the hive receive half their genetics from the queen and half from the drones she mated with so you will have some variation of color in the workers. I have several hives with dark queens...

  4. Re: Swarm prevention for various sized colonies

I tried several things last--checker board, reversing boxes, etc. and they still swarmed like crazy. I guess I was too far behind the curve and they had come out of winter determined to swarm....

    Re: Three dead hives...

Sorry you lost your hives. Don't give up yet. All of us have or will lose hives. It's a bad feeling even when you've been doing it a while or have several hives. I've lost two hives (went queen less...

Re: First time checkin from Styx, TX

Welcome to BeeSource! You'll enjoy your retirement with the bees. You'll hopefully have lots of time to watch them and learn just from watching the entrance. Good luck!

Re: Hive location choice for newb

Go with full sun. Like Michael and seapro220 said go full sun, I had trouble with 3-4 hives that were in afternoon shade. SHB and wax moth would not leave them alone, lost 3 of them over 2 years....

    Re: Maple flow

Getting red maple pollen (greenish brown) the last few days here. As long as we get 4-5 days above 50F the bees fly well and bring in lots of pollen (and I assume nectar since their abdomens seem to...

    Re: Sugar Water Ratios?

I use a 5:3 in the fall. The sugar seems to dissolve better than a 2:1 syrup. Last year (2014 fall) they seemed to store more of the 5:3 than they did the 2:1 in previous years, but last year seemed...

    Re: Why foundationless? Newbie questions

Many reasons to go foundation less, primary reason is that the pool of foundation is polluted with chemicals that, even in very small quantities, can affect brood and bees. Beekeepers try to minimize...

    Re: Bes foraging grain/feed ?

They will gather dust/debris from bird feeders this time of year also. I've had to assist bees that got disoriented in a clear bird feeder so they could escape. It's really a good sign that they are...
