Re: Wasps, what's the threat and what to do

Haven't had any wasp problems. Had a few hornets lately but the girls have been kicking their butts.

    Re: taking bees south

I don't know about the setup there but you might bring back some africanized bees and bunch of hitchhiking SHB.
  3. Re: workers tossing dead greyish bees out of hive - sign of starvation or??

When they're in a dearth they'll toss out the drones, even the drone brood which is undeveloped and gray gets the boot. That would be my guess.

Re: Moving TBH inside for the winter

The first thing I would do is move that follower board back some and give them some more room to expand. I've never moved a hive but I've read that you shouldn't move it short distances or they'll...

Re: Another Hive has absconded due to shb

I had a compost bin in my backyard not far from the beehives last year and had lots of SHB. This year I don't have one and have seen very few SHB. My hives are in more shade than sun.

"SMOKE ME!" My wife said this after she got stung and other bees were coming after heR.
  9. Re: Is this TBH too small for backyard? Realistic to have just 1-2 hives?

I would get larger hives for the bees and keep the small hive close by as a swarm trap. Start the bees off in the large hive with a divider board and when space starts to fill up move the divider...

    Re: Brood location

Early in the season when the hive is expanding fast there may be brood in any of the combs. As the year winds down the queen will stop laying as many eggs and eventually the workers will fill the...

Re: hives never stopped taking sugar syrup.

I put two packages in last spring and offered them sugar syrup. They ignored it and went about their business. This month, however, we're in a dearth and when I offered them syrup they nuts for it....

    Re: Orientation Flight???

My two hives do that every day between 4 and 5 pm. It lasts about 15-20 minutes. They usually don't do it at the same time. They're orientation flights (IMHO)

Computer models also tell us that the earth is going to warm up, the seas are going to rise, and we're all either going to burn up or drown. How much you believe in them is up to you.

    Re: Is this goldenrod pollen?

I didn't know bees got anything from crepe myrtle. We have lots of it here and it's been blooming for a month but I have yet to ever see a bee on any of the blooms.

Re: Some bees crawling in grass in front of hive

Are the bees crawling around on the ground drones? I see them in front of my hives this time of year when the workers kick them out so they don't have to feed them.

We're in a dearth here also and my bees are not happy campers. They come at me when I'm refilling their feeders outside of and away from the hives.
