Re: Virgin Queen and MAQS treatment

I am going to treat with MAQS for the first time in a couple of weeks and have also been concerned about queen loss. I think if I were you I would wait until she has started laying and then...

    Re: making rabbets with router

Routers are great tools especially for furniture. I find that building hive bodies, supers and components is a lot easier with a table saw. If you are not into furniture building you can get set up...

    Re: Sycamore for hive bodies?

Sycamore is pretty expensive for bee hives. It goes for about $9-10/Bd Ft. quarter sawn. It would be pretty heavy to be throwing around in your apiary.

    Re: Moving a Swarm

Thanks. That sounds like good advice also. Although at my age I need as much daylight as I can get. Probably dusk is as late as I can manage.

    Re: Moving a Swarm

Thanks for the well thought out advice Oldtimer. I understand what you are saying about the brood and if I am understanding you correctly I would be better off leaving them in the medium box they are...

    Moving a Swarm

I have a stack of medium supers some with frames w/o foundation just outside the electric fence of my apiary. A swarm (not from my hives) has taken up residence in the boxes and has begun building...

    Re: Super sized deeps??

You might want to try the plans here http://http://www.horizontalhive.com/index.shtml
  9. Re: Can I put 3/4 depth frames into full depth long hive?

Just create a removable false bottom in the portion of the long hive that you are putting in the 3/4 frames. I would probably make it like a screened bottom board to help with mites and ventilation....

    Re: Black Locust!

I agree. The earth is evolving and has been since it's inception. In that context "native" would have to be viewed in relation to a time period. Most probably everything was "non-native" at one...

    Re: Black Locust!

I cut down a small stand (4 trees 30' that were dead and dying) of black locust on my property. This was five years ago. I now have a stand of about 20 locust in a nice grove like configuration that...

    Re: Eco Wood Treatment

I spray it on with a garden sprayer and then run a paint paint roller (to even it out) over the assembled hive/super body on the outside. I don't do the inside because it is not necessary and to save...

Re: The height of your hive boxes

You could do horizontal hives like I am moving too. That way you alleviate the lifting and height problem. Some people say the bees will not move sideways but others say is no problem. I am going to...

Re: Using Langstroth Frames in TBH (horizontal)

    Sergey,
Thanks for the ideas and well wishes. I do not think I will have a problem with the medium frames in my area. I read Lazutin's "Keeping Bees With a Smile" - very interesting ideas but a...

The hive looks great. Your idea of the rebate all the way around should work I may have to steal it.

Re: Using Langstroth Frames in TBH (horizontal)

    Shannon,
Good points. I have now been thinking that I would use medium frames with the hive being between 38-40" long. I am thinking about a series of 3 small covers (migratory?) that could be...
