    Re: Red tinted honey

Very good point. Just this week I've seen about 4 hummingbirds around my home. Neighbors have them as well, although I don't put color dye in the mixture, they do. Thank you.

    Red tinted honey

I'm sure this is not the classic red candy cane issue (but could be).

Inspecting a nuc today showed that it had honey that was red tinted. More so a pinkish red color. First time ever I seen...

Good luck on the project. I just got done with two queenless splits and like skidmld stated, robbing is my biggest problem. Also I didn't have a screened bottom board on one of the nucs and didn't...

Re: Why I started beekeeping [link]

Great post Adam. I really like the part about getting your kids interested in beekeeping.
  8. Migrating failed nuc bees back into original hive

I know this is the Queen & Bee Breeding section, but I'm its related to failed queen rearing.

Just as a precaution, I was wondering on what to do with the nurse bees if they do not successfully...

    Re: Workers killing Queen Cells

That was my first thought, but checking through each frame and at the bottom I didn't see her. However, I did see 6 new queen cells started from this new nuc. Its weird that they killed the one I...
  10. Uncapped Honey (Green Honey) along with Capped Honey on a frame extract or not?

At the local bee club the instructors were doing an extraction demo. One of the instructors took a frame of honey, showed where it was capped and some of it was not capped and did a quick thrust to...

    Workers killing Queen Cells

What reasons would workers kill capped queen cells? After a split I made, I took one capped cell and put it in a nuc with worker/nurse bees. A couple of days later two of the sides of the cell was...

Re: Question about finding a mentor.

You two just gave me a new marketing idea: Like Two Fingers Tequila with a worm, its going to be Two Fingers Honey with a queen bee in the jar.

    Re: Bee and neighbor problem

Ask him what the bee looked like and when he describes it shake your head and say "naw, that's not one of mine". Done.

Re: Question about finding a mentor.

Not many folks do it anymore, but offer to work for free doing "anything" they need you to do. I did this with someone and was able to learn tons of stuff already (but there is tons still to learn)....
  16. Re: Can someone help explain this pollination contract entry?

Thanks dtompsett, this made sense on how you explained it. If you have a grower that wants you to move hives every other day on a whim, then it will allow the grower to understand the beekeepers...

I agree with you and I can understand the seasoned beekeepers point as well. Do what's best for you though. If your learning through studying then that's all that matters. I'm the same way and for...

"Grower agrees to reimburse the beekeeper for any additional movement of colonies in, out, or around the crop."

Obtained from the University of Delaware on a pollination contract sample. For some...

I'll be doing it next year. I took a class at Frankfort that covered material on what to expect. Expect everything (old school and new)!
  20. 7D nails for supers and hive bodies (Galvanized vs hot dipped, vs electro-galvanized)

Since a major beekeeping company took over a month for my nails to come in, I decided to start buying nails locally. The only issue is I cannot find a 7D nail anywhere locally. Only 6d and 8d. As...

    Re: Mold in bee hive.

When I see mold starting in beehives, I try to find out why and correct the issue. Some reasons is because the hive is situated at an angle that lets water run "in" instead of out so it doesn't get...
