    Re: pollen sub yet?

I have as of last weekend.
  2. Re: Question for those of you that build your own bottom board beetle traps

I could easily get the trays for the Freeman beetle traps I have now, they are $15 at ehartwood (Pricey but cheaper than shipping the whole contraption). My question is more does having a part of the...
  3. Question for those of you that build your own bottom board beetle traps

    Hi all,

I am setting up more hives and strongly believe having a oil trap for the bottom board is a necessity to control SHB. Rather than order them, this time I would like to build my own....

    Re: Gloves....What U Using?

I use a Mann lake ventilated jacket. I like to use gloves and have found the cheep welding gloves from Harbor Freight work just fine, and when they get gunked up I just toss them. The bee gloves with...

Re: you have got to be kidding

It's not those "evil" commercial guys ...it was freakin cold here and colder where you are! :eek:That's a ton of stress for the bees, a windbreak would have helped but what we had was way...
  6. Re: Got Mann Lake's 2014 catalog today - it's getting cheaper to build your own!

One thing Mann Lake has done right is they take part in Amazon Prime. I use Prime for a LOT of stuff around the house. I don't need a lot of equipment in bulk, but it's nice to know that if I need a...

Re: Ticks-can't take it any longer. What to do/

Use Gardstar, same stuff people drench around hives for small hive beetles and that you can buy through bee supply stores. It's been around a long time for livestock, it's Permethirn. I've also heard...
  8. Re: Do I smoke the hive when I open to remove Queen cage?

I didn't need to use smoke to remove the queen cages because there just weren't that many bees. Now I do, even though I don't pull more than one frame just to drive them off the sides and tops when...
  9. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

Those beetles were probably clustered with the bees to keep warm when they were shook. Are they on new foundation or do you have comb? The plus is you slip a few traps in there, and if they are just...
  10. Re: Hive beetles.....4 days after installing new bees??? HELP!

Yep that's SHB. If you have pollen patties I would pull them or cut them down to just what the bees can take in a couple days (that's what I do). Get some traps quick...I use Freeman beetles traps...

    Distance between swarm traps

    Hi all,

I've found a lot of posts on how far to put traps from existing hives, but not a lot of info on how close I can put swarm traps to each other. How close can I go without either confusing...

    Re: Nucs or Deeps

I'd go straight to the deep. If the bottom board is solid or closed off would make more of a difference. Hang the queen in the middle and they have frames between them and two cold walls, of course...

Re: Cold weather installation on foundation

In the same weather my healthy hives took the syrup like free wine at a wedding without any warming. If they are in full sun the sun will warm it up for you.

Re: Cold weather installation on foundation

I had the same thing happen, one hive did not take the syrup while the other two sucked it down. It's all but dead now, the queen is dead for sure. If they are not eating, you might want to treat for...

Re: Lost a package after 10 days

Well the two remaining hives are going well, all queens were released and I saw one of them. The bees have loaded a lot of the comb with sugar water and they were bringing and storing pollen in some...

Re: Lost a package after 10 days

I'll find out in a few minutes, getting ready to go through the hives and remove the cages. Unfortunately it was too cold most days to break up the cluster and when it wasn't I didn't get home from...

Re: Lost a package after 10 days

There were days that were warm enough that they could take and the packages were all full. But these guys just never lapped it up (the feeders you see were all filled at the same time). I thought...

Lost a package after 10 days

    Hi all,

One of my three packages is dead. Virginia decided that it wanted to revisit January instead of spring, but I don't think that is it as my other two packaged hives are doing just fine....

Re: Cold weather installation on foundation

The temp was just into the 50s Saturday and the bees were flying. I think as others have said they'll be fine even though we have several more days of cold weather. I could tell mine were taking the...
  21. Re: Anyone else scrambling to get equipment ready for swarm season?

I should have my first couple ready for painting this weekend, may be putting up 5 to 10 in the local area, so many other things I'm doing around the house (plus I need some time to fish!)

Re: Cold weather installation on foundation

I installed my three. Did not use any sugar spray due to the marginal temps, but everything went OK. As long as they snuggle up to the queen they should be good (queens looked a little small, but I...

Re: Cold weather installation on foundation

I'm getting my bees same time and place, I've made candy to put on them and will be using boardmans vice a top feeder until it warms up. Highs are suppose to be around 50 and they never get it right,...
