Are you sure you have a queen? Have you seen eggs?

Re: Less may be more by Mark Winston

All of this assumes that your fields benefit from bees. I'm no farmer but I don't suspect corn and soy beans will get much benefit from bees.

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Everything seems to be going well this far. The small sliver of light is coming from the door. That will be fixed soon. Fan, heater, and timers all functioning appropriately. Once door is properly...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

I found where the light was getting in. It was in the door. Where the two doors came together I had to figure out an alternative for weather stripping at the bottom of where the doors come together....

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

We will see how this goes but I feel confident in the science behind wintering in this fashion. I can not only reduce consumption of honey stores but I can also prevent freezing of small colonies and...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Ian I see on your website that you feed something in winter. Is that water or sugar syrup? Also for my small setup how often should I be running my ventilation fan?

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Jamming up vent is probably something to consider. As long as my fan runs I don't think I'll have humidity issues. Between only having 3 hives in a 8x10 building, dry heat, and air exchange humidity...

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

One thing to keep in mind is that our winters here are very cold and dry. I know that some get wet winters but we are very dry here. With proper ventilation I'd be surprised if humidity is a problem....

    Re: My Indoor Wintering Setup

Starved out with honey on the comb I'm afraid. Everybody says that cold doesn't kill bees but I still call bull. All of my march deaths have been due to bees clustering down tight during a long cold...

    My Indoor Wintering Setup

I should get a few pics to upload but my site is a ~8x10 garden shed. I moved to the property this summer and I have had two nearly 100% loss winters. So I decided to keep my bees in the shed this...

    Re: First Cleansing Flight 2014

Due to moving in the next few months I had to bring a hive home. I temporarily put it in front of my house until I could get it through all of the snow to the rest of my bees. Unfortunately we had...

    Re: Autozone hive tool

I bought two packs of these small nail pry bars from menards. Good price and my wife bought me a ton. Can fit two easily in my suit pocket so I always have a few on me. I have a large hive tool I...

    Re: Alexandria Minnesota Legal Talk

Oh ya trust me I read that with a fine tooth comb. That clause would allow me to do what I want, but again it's other townships that I'm now paranoid about. I just assumed that when you lived out...

    Re: Alexandria Minnesota Legal Talk

I'm looking at a house in that township that has just a smidge under 5. But it's surrounded by a wetland conservation zone. So really that specific township isn't a problem. I guess I just assumed...

    Alexandria Minnesota Legal Talk

So the town I live in now has no rules regarding beekeeping. Nothing. I got a new job in the Alexandria, mn area. I know I have seen members from the area on beesource. So I am wondering what you...
  17. Re: Small scale indoor wintering. Is anyone doing it?

There must be some sort of app for that lol. But seriously isn't there? Something that you can pull up on your phone and get all the stats on the temp in your shed?
  18. Re: Small scale indoor wintering. Is anyone doing it?

Let me just say that this thread was an amazing read. There is an old timer in my area that winters in a shed. He does well. I don't have the means to put bees in a shed but I am moving to a more...

My failure has been assuming they would move down. Keep a close eye on them as my warre hives would rather swarm than move down as expected. If they are starting to look a bit congested in there I...

Looks like I will have to wait to tomorrow. So my only question is about storing overnight in the garage. It will still be pretty cold in that garage.

    Bt question

I bought some bt from sundance (thanks sundance). I saw a moth in some old comb. So far no damage to anything but I should really get the bt applied. So my question...is there a period of time...
