    Re: Managing swarm season commercially

    Will,
When you use the Demaree method do you have to use a double screen? And do you remove the old queen or just let the two fight it out?

    Re: Screened or Solid Bottom

If they cost the same as solids I might go with screens just for the extra ventilation, but that one benefit does not out weigh the extra cost and they seem to tear up faster.

    Roland,
Is rain getting into the supers ever a problem when you have them slid back?
  4. Re: should I feed sugar syrup along with protein patties?

Thanks for the replys. It has been colder than normal here this year, in fact the news said it was the coldest January since 1985 and I'm guessing February might be the coldest for a generation as...
  5. should I feed sugar syrup along with protein patties?

This is my first year trying protein patties. Last week I put a regular megabee protein patty on all of my hives. My question is if the patty alone is enough, or should I feed syrup or sugar patties...

Re: Q: Theorictical Honey per Acre

What is the land you currently have like? You said you had 20 acres of random grass, what about the rest? If it is in woods I would try find or make clear spots to plant tulip poplars. If you plant...

    Re: Screened bottom boards out?

I don't plan on buying any more screened bottom boards. They cost more, rot quicker, and I haven't seen any difference between hives on a solid and hives on a screened bottom board.

    Re: modified dadant hive bodies

    odfrank,

Brother Adams seems to have thought they provided a better brood nest and helped limit swarming. Have you found this to be the case?

Do you try to provide extra drones

How many of you guys go to the trouble of providing extra drones for breeding virgin queens, especially if you are only try to raise 20-30 queens a year?

Re: Too late to treat ?

Depends on what you are treating with. Something like api-guard that is temp sensitive and take at least four weeks, it might be too late. But I believe something like apivar can be used year round.

    Apiguard chased off hive beetles

A couple of weeks ago I put on the first round of apiguard. As I was going through my hives I saw sevearl hive beetles in most of them. A couple of days ago I put on the second round and only saw one...

Thanks everybody. Canola is new to me. In fact, I think last year was the first time I ever saw a field of it. Hopefully it will produce honey around here as well as it does in other areas. All my...

That's good looking stuff Josh. Our club is going to have program on making creamed honey soon. If I can figure it out maybe I'll give it a try.

What do you do with the honey? Do you just sell it as extracted honey or do you make creamed honey out of it?

Would you requeen in the fall or in the spring?

I tried getting an answer to this a while back, thought I'd try it again. For the past three years I've just sort of requeened as necessary, but I haven't been thrilled with the results. I want to...
