  1. Re: Transitioning June nucs from deep to mediums, foundationless

I also start my hives with foundationless mediums with the intentions to go all mediums, but one absconded and the other was really really week. So I ponied up and bought two nuc's and two frames of...
  2. Re: Transitioning June nucs from deep to mediums, foundationless

Messy! I did that with the comb on the bottom of the picture above, I wouldn't want to do it again, so I will avoid allowing them to draw in open spaces again. And to add to the mess, it dropped...
  3. Re: Transitioning June nucs from deep to mediums, foundationless

I would be carefull putting a medium in a deep or a deep in medium hanging into a deep. There is so much room below that the bees will build comb on the bottom of the frame. After I did this, Mr...

Re: Is the northeast in a dearth now?

I could be wrong, but in my area, North western Vermont, my hives are slowing comb production. It has been about 2 weeks since I put the first honey super on my strongest and it has barley any comb...

  6. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

I don't know how my signature says Nebraska or how to change it. To your point, it is even worse, I live about 15 miles away from Michael Palmer in Northern Vermont
  7. Re: What's your strategy for growing your apiaries?

At the end of the flow season, if your hive consisted of 2 deep brood boxes, why couldn't one simply move the second deep to it's own Bottom board and call it it's own single hive? Basically a walk...

Re: Deep frame in Medium box

Okay, inspected last night, 4 days after putting a deep frame in a medium box and what a mess, I won't ever do that again.

They had built out the entire empty space below the frame in just 4 days....

    Re: End of Summer Splits???

I guess my real concern is around first year hives and knowing if they are strong enough. Both have completely full bottom deeps, 1 has a partially (1/2) full second deep, while the other has a...

    Deep frame in Medium box

So last weekend I put a medium foundationless super on and today when I inspected I found no comb. Nothing.

So in hopes of getting the medium box to draw comb, I pulled two deep frames of honey...

    Just an update.

Inspected last night and would you believe it, in three days they rebuilt the entire frame. So when a small piece of new comb fell off while I was trying to realign it properly,...

What I didn't realize is that even if you keep the frame completely horizontal while rotating the frame, if the comb isn't connected at the bottom bar, it is still too heavy to support itself

There was no way to rubber band it, it was pretty much a mess, so I just left it for them. There is still a decent flow on here in northern Vermont, so lets hope for the best.
