    Re: Royal Bee Supply beware

Industry standard for 5 frame Nuc is. 3-4 frames of brood 1 frame of honey and the 5th can be brood honey comb or foundation with a laying Queen.

Looks like they were strong enough to want to...

Re: Colony update here in Pa

Did a check up the other week when we had a warm spell. Put 30# of our candy on everyone even if they didn't need it. Good populations in all no duds as of yet out of 50 hives and 30 nucs. We...

    Re: Industrial Beekeeper

Mark we have a term for these guys with low numbers selling some honey and doing local pollination. They are sideliners which is what most people are with up to say 1000 hives. These people mostly...
  4. Re: When extracting someone else's honey??

What is the going fee for custom extracting. I was thinking I may get my hands sticking and do some next year.

Re: moving bees when it is cold

Sounds like you had a lack of ventilation. I never close hives to move them, I would never get done. If traveling in day time with temps over 50 I will net the load. I move a few in the day every...

Re: moving bees when it is cold

I do the same. If I want to pop covers I don't care what the temp is, I will even lift boxes but not pull any frames. You only have to worry about movingbees in cold weather if you are not using...
  7. Re: requirements for moving bees into florida

I know for a fact if you are mating near the Greenswamp or Richloam you have no fear of African stock. We are mating thousands of nucs there now and do so twice a year. So that area is completely...

    Re: Baking grade honey

I got $1.80 for LA bakery in the barrel 2 months ago, $3 in buckets and it goes up $.40 for ELA. I get $7 retail for all other sizes.
  9. Re: requirements for moving bees into florida

I have to say FBF mates about 15,000 queens a year in central Florida and have no issue with African traits and our bees are calmer than most I have moved or worked for others over the years.
    The...

Re: How much honey on orange blossom?

We made a great crop last year in our area it was an early and very long flow that didn't add up fast. I averaged about 60# to 70# from the few I had making honey and nucs mated and filled out...
  11. Re: I Would Like to Winter Some Hives in the South

I bring mine to Fl late Nov early Dec and put some in orange groves and some near them. As for finding yards your best bet is to get some cards and put put them on doors if no one is home when you...

    Re: Un heated honey house

Cold will not hurt the honey. I store all my honey in an unheated shed since I have no room in the honey house for it if I want to work on equipment.

    Re: Semis vs truck

Yes it is. Most of the time we try for steps and send 84 into pollination and 72 coming out if we are lucky. So it is 12 semis out 14 or 15 back.
Oh and that is 72 on a 48 foot 2 inches over front...

    Re: When disaster strikes!!!

Well this could be a very long post about the fun of Pollination. This year I had bees hit by tractors several places. Had one pallet side off the truck and into the swamp beside a cranberry bog,...

    Re: Semis vs truck

High flat we can put 72 6 way double deeps on, steps can get 84 depending on weight. I haul bees for a living year round. Hands down if you have a full load send them on the semi.
    And if you read...

Any trailer over 10,000# requires a class A no matter what you pull it with, even a pickup.

    Camcote, How many coats?

Title says it all. I am reworking my Grandfather's 1952? Woodman 50 frame extractor. We spent many hours cleaning and sanding. I then put 6 coats of good quality grey primer on and a coat of the...

    Re: Goldenrod in full bloom

We started to have a flow 3 or 4 days ago. Modest shake but dragging in lots of pollen. Looks like it should at least fill in the brood chambers since we are lite right now

Re: Colony update here in Pa

You can sell full hives and nucs with no inspection when it is just a few. If you want to ship queens you have to have a permit. I will be having Jim out this week to finally get mine done this year.

Re: Colony update here in Pa

It is once a year and a sampling of all your yards. Depends on your numbers I think. If it was all hives they would be at mine for an few days, usually it is 10-15 % if they like what they see it is...

Re: IBDS syndrome [ snot brood]

    Re: Transport Requirments

If you are intrastate you don't need ifta or medical card and with your set up Sqkcrk you don't need a CDL either way, your trailer is registered for less than 10,000 and your truck is less than...

    Re: Transport Requirments

The short answer is yes you need ifta, logbook and dot#. You have the right CDL since even though you are in a 1 ton you are pulling a trailer registered over 10,000# which requires a Class A.
  25. Re: can i take a bunch of stray wild bees add a queen and have a hive

If they are stray bees yes you can. We do it all the time with bees that come in on honey to extract. If they are robbers they will not stay. I have made hives when moving bees out in the middle of...
