    Quivering Bees

Each side of frame has average of 10 sick bees quivering similar to waggle dance. No other symptoms. Any suggestions?

    Re: barn swarm

    Howdy Griz --

You might build a partial box of light plywood to enclose the colony with just a
small opening and leave till spring to do the cutout and transfer.

Re: wood putty for hive bodies?

    Howdy Justin

I picked up a good idea for filling cracks and holes from George Emerie many years ago.
Use automobile body filler. It sets up quickly and sands fine.

    Re: How long before?

    Howdy TopDog --

To determine whether they have a queen, give them a frame with eggs from another hive.
If Qless they will start Q cells within a day or two. I find that a hopelessly Qless hive...

    Re: Drawing comb on plastic

    Howdy NC --

Check this forum for email for Grant Gillard who wrote a 30 page ebook on
successful use of plastic foundation. Best suggestions brought together I
    have seen. The coated...
  8. Wax Worms

    Howdy Tom --

If the affected frames contain capped brood which you don't need to lose by freezing,
    here is an old trick:

Shake off the bees and strike the bottom bar over the end bar sharply...

    Wild Comb

    Howdy Dev --

Not to worry. This is common in first time use of plastic foundation even if the frames
are crowded close together. Just scrape off the new comb. Next time they draw out

    Hive Tool

Yep, I still have my first hive tool. I made it from a piece of l inch strap steel.
No forge, but somehow I managed to bend it cold and filed the ends to form a
scraper and "prizer". Not bad for...
  11. Deeps to Mediums

    Howdy Michael --

Once you get the deep combs empty, you can just run them over a table saw
to reduce to 5 7/8" and put on a new bottom bar, then you are in business.

    Swarms leaving

    Howdy Anthony

Most likely no queen. Three keys:

Open brood - be sure there are eggs.
Close entrance with screen so they can not leave for 3 days.
    Feed 1:1 syrup immediately.

    Sbb

    Howdy Swobee --

I spent considerable time, work, and money on finding the best screen size.
Sizes 4. 6. and 8 were tried -- fairly large numbers of hives used in
    each case. My findings showed...

    Sticky Board

    Howdy Troy and all --

Several years ago I tried a sticky board -- best the pest control people had.

Until a few years ago I had some of the same problem. I started screening the entrance for 3 full days -- with a syrup feeder installed. Have not had this problem for 3 years.

    Howdy WV --

I stopped using foundation with hooks long ago. A thick wedge with adequate
horizontal nailing will hold the foundation securely without bowing.

    Places for beetles to hide
