If hives are surviving without it why use it? You would no longer be treatment free if you used it. Even with Oxalic Acid you'll still have mites won't ever eradicate 100% of them.

SHB will have more of a tendency to overwinter within the cluster, they need to share the heat the bees generate to survive.
You have to either do a sugar shake or alcohol wash to do a proper mite check. Visibly seeing mites on bees tells you that there is a high infestation.
Look for a ball of bees in the grass she'll be there. She may possibly find her way back but no promises.
