    Re: Queen finally started laying!

    Queen finally started laying!

    Finally! Success!!
On March 2nd we did a cutout as a nasty cold front started moving in. We didn't realize that it was going to get so cold so quickly! There were lots of drones in this hive and I...
  4. Re: Have two hives from cutouts. Questions.

Didn't get your post until after the inspection. They have actually already attached the comb to the frame and to the comb around it. We had to use a hive tool because in a couple of spots they had...
  5. Re: Have two hives from cutouts. Questions.

Thanks. We realized this going in. It's a learning experience for sure. We're not going to take on anymore cutouts until next year. The bees we have needed to be removed ASAP from their original...

    Re: My homemade bee feeders

The feed is similar to fine flour so I don't see any drifting at all. It pretty much stays dry packed unless tapped or shaken. No baffle needed. :)

    Re: My homemade bee feeders

I fill up the tube with dry substitute and bees access from side. No squirrel issues yet and if there was one, I would use a baffle to keep them out. Same baffles that are used to keep squirrels from...
  8. Re: Have two hives from cutouts. Questions.

Hive two is completely empty of bees. They are all in the log as far as I can tell. A friend of ours informed us that the larvae we saw are hive beetle larvae. About 1/4" long and white and they were...

    Re: My homemade bee feeders

It's just PVC pipe. I used a screw on cap and adapter on the top. The bottom is sealed up with an internal test cap used in testing plumbing lines. The PVC pipe sticking out the side is cut at an...

    My homemade bee feeders

When I saw the prices of bee feeders available for sale online, my jaw hit the floor from sticker shock! So I made my own. :D

  12. Re: Have two hives from cutouts. Questions.

Just a quick note...we received the bee logs on Wednesday night and we moved them into the hive the following day. And it was yesterday that I heard the swarm.
  13. Have two hives from cutouts. Questions.

We recently acquired two hives from cutouts. Hive number one is doing wonderfully as far as I can tell. They are receiving 2:1 syrup for now and Ultra Bee food. Hive number two is a nightmare mess! A...

We enjoyed our first cutout experience so much that we are looking forward to doing it again! The first home we went to turned out to have a wasp issue. We left to go to another house that for sure...
  15. Re: Going to get our first cutout this weekend. Questions.

A photo would be great. Thanks!
It is a cutout and we'll be grabbing everything we can that is there. From what I understand, it's located under someone's stairs. We'll see. I plan on taking lots of...
  16. Going to get our first cutout this weekend. Questions.

Our first hive is going to come from a cutout. We are really excited about it. I understand that there's a possibility that they may not make it through the winter because it's so late in the season...

I'm located in central Texas. Bulverde to be exact. Just got done with the triple digit temps here. So, obviously, keeping cool as well as sting free are my top priorities.
