Re: What Percent of Hives Are Feral vs Kept

Why remove the environment they are supposed to live in? Why, when beekeeping is so regional, that what applies in the North, doesn't necessarily apply in the South (and vice versa)?

Re: What Percent of Hives Are Feral vs Kept

I still want to know how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop....

Re: Are we in a dearth here in SE Louisiana?

I saw the same Casper, bumble bees all over the wisteria in numbers never seen before. I'm next door in Allen Parish and also see yellow and orange pollen coming in in good quantity. A little bit of...
  4. Re: Lots of eggs, no capped brood, very little forage (low workforce)

Would it be possible to downsize this hive to a 5-frame nuc with two frames of capped brood from the booming hive? Just curious if it can be saved.

Re: Are we in a dearth here in SE Louisiana?

I think our summer dearth is beginning. Only in my second year and looking at my notes from last year, comparing to what I observe. We should get a little flow in October from Goldenrod, but last...

I think we are on the SW side also. Tried to peak inside yesterday and the girls wouldn't have it. Thought AHB for a second!

    Re: Honey Container Prices

Yeah, where's the moderator when you need them?
  8. Re: Why the tall stacks of supers, why not take some and process??

Please explain. I didn't think honey could get any drier once capped....hence the reason they cap it.

    Re: Advice for scaling up

If you want the genetics of the production hives, you might consider a "cut down" split. It would keep production high and still give you a chance to propagate the desired genetics. ...

Re: building comb from bottom up?

Same thing happened in one of my hives....outermost frame with a drawn frame next to it. Kinda bass ackwards, but they're doing an OK job of it so I just left it alone.

Re: Flows on the Gulf Coast

One of my hives in town has two,8-frame mediums filled and mostly capped (has two for brood). The other, a foot away, only drew and filled one frame in one medium (also two for brood)....

    Re: 2,4-D Herbicide and Bees

There's an idea floating around the net about using a vinegar and salt solution to kill weeds. It's non-selective, so will kill all plants. Haven't tried it....yet.

    Re: Chinese Tallow Trees

Same here, lots of trees but bees didn't seem very interested. Flow hasn't been what I had hoped it would be. And mine are also bringing in pollen.

Re: I'm done with 9 frame spacers in supers

Not all beeks are commercial, trying to optimize their operation. Not a beeks are hobbyist, trying to just get a little honey. Whatever works for you and your girls is what you should do.

Re: Hive not tended too for 6 years

I retrieved a wood duck nest box this spring that was full of wacky comb. Pulled the bottom off and set it on top of two 8-frame mediums, then stacked empty boxes around the duck box and put a lid...

I've seen a few bees on the Tallow around here, but my best hive has only filled one medium so far. Very slow to draw out any more.

Re: Do Bees Make Poisoned Honey?

Why? What is sugar water going to do that honey can't?
  23. Re: Best advice I EVER got starting out: use ALL one-size boxes

Stack two empty mediums and put the deep frames in. Build up from there and when time to rotate boxes next spring, you can remove the deep frames and cut the comb to fit mediums. Trade the now empty...

Re: New queen for honeybound hive

Are you certain the queen is not in there???? If truly "honey bound" , then that would explain why the queen isn't laying (no room), and changing queens won't fix that. You might try replacing a...
