Re: Tell me all about white clover

Following a drought, most of my yard is now dutch clover. I would like to purchase seed and make my entire yard clover, as well as my back pasture/hillside where I have my hives. Around 5 acres...

Re: New nuc fanning, but not too hot

Laying workers come from hives without any open brood. Leave the supercedure cells alone. If there were no eggs or larvae, those are probably false cells anyway, but if they are legit queen cells...

    Queenright cell finisher and swarming

Is swarming an issue with a queenright cell finisher colony? I would think that a good strong colony with all those queen cells hanging above the excluder would want to swarm.

Re: New nuc fanning, but not too hot

If you have a hive with a laying queen just take a frame of eggs and put it in your nuc.
  5. Re: Looks like I got took on my first set of nucs...

I would not be discouraged at all if I were you (or your father-in-law). Maybe you didn't get the best deal on your nucs, but I bet they will be fine and heck, you might even get some honey off your...
  6. Re: Can I use queens from cells that never emerged to make swarm lures?

I don't actually have any queen juice at the moment. Do you make queen juice just when you have an extra laying queen to sacrifice?
  7. Re: How long does it take package bees to start drawing comb and is my queen dead?

Flow is on in my region and bees ignore frame feeders, boardman feeders, and open feeders. Every package is different. Some are just more motivated than others.
  8. Re: How long does it take package bees to start drawing comb and is my queen dead?

The bees you found dead probably just never re-entered the hive and died overnight. I find dead bees when I do splits, even last night, and it only got down to about 45 F here. It takes a while to...
  9. Can I use queens from cells that never emerged to make swarm lures?

I grafted recently and some of the queen cells were capped but the queens never emerged. Can I use them for swarm lures, or do they not have the proper pheromones?

Also, does it matter how much...

Re: Variation in queen emergence time?

Well I have another question to add. Maybe it would get more eyes in its own thread but I'll ask it here. I forgot to include it in my update.

One of the new virgin queens was SMALL. I mean no...

Re: Variation in queen emergence time?

In case anyone is interested, two more of the queens were emerged when I checked this morning. I left the other cells in place but I am not counting on them to emerge. I prepared to graft again...

Re: Variation in queen emergence time?

I'm clearly not the expert here, but I believe the goblet shaped cells are false or aborted queen cells. The peanut-shaped, vertically-oriented cells are queen cells and since they are grouped along...

Re: Variation in queen emergence time?

Since this thread seems to be doing well, I'd like to ask another queen-related question or two.

I checked one nuc on the 14th and the (emerged virgin) queen looked quite pale. I looked in on her...

Re: Variation in queen emergence time?

Thanks everyone for the replies and information. I am going to leave the cells in place but cut out and utilize the emergency cells as backups. Doing that, I will still have more queens than I really...

    Variation in queen emergence time?

I grafted for the first time back on April 3rd. I grafted 20 larvae and 10 were accepted and fully drawn into queen cells. I put them into 10 nucs. As of today, only three have emerged. Is this...

  20. Thickness of wood -- building nucs with 1/2" lumber okay?

Hi all. I found the plans on this site for making 4 nucs from a single 4' x 8' sheet of plywood. I like them and they turned out great. However, I did not build these to sell. I want to raise...

That makes a lot of sense but hadn't occurred to me. I think yours is the only answer I need. Thanks!

    Earliest time to split?

Obviously there needs to be population of drones to mate a new queen. I'm in SW MO. Does anyone in the area have an idea of when drones generally begin to show up around here? Last year I made splits...

I believe that the 1131 lbs does not include the weight of the bucket or forks, either.
