    Re: pulling frames for inspection

I remove the outside first so I have room to do whatever else needs to be done.

    Moving brood

I have a friend whose hive is queen less. They live about 11 minutes from me. Thinking of giving them a frame of brood so the bees could start their own queen. Anyone had any success transporting...
  4. Re: 2 of 3 packages installed abscounded..any ideas?

Bummer for the loss. From what you posted the SBB most likely was the cause. With the queen cage sitting directly on the screen she probably got chilled or the bees just could not regulate the temp...

Re: what is the reasons for bees to abscond

Sounds like to me you are on track. For me, I make sure the box I want them to stay in is not too big or too small for the swarm. I do feed them sugar mix 1:1. I also keep the reducer rotated to...

Re: How long can bees be kept in a package

I would install on Saturday if anyway possible. In the past I have had to keep bees in their package for almost a week do to crappy weather. But the sooner the better in my book.

Re: Hive top feeder. Inner cover?

If I remember correctly I used the inner cover. I put it on top of the feeder. You could probably go with or without one. As long as nothing can get in and gain access to the syrup.

    Re: bees killing each other

Even tho an old thread I would say if only a bee or two they were robbers and guard bees did what they had to.

    Re: swarm left queen behind

The bees that swarmed must of had the original queen with them - where the queen goes they cluster. I would guess the queen you found is one that emerged from a queen cell. If what you found on the...

    Re: Short Course or Not?

Take the course. I'm sure it will be worth it. I just started reading Ross Conrad's Natural Beekeeping myself - so far I really like it.

Re: Food coloring to Spring syrup?

I used green, red, blue, and yellow. Only because it was the only colors I had. They all showed up fine. Since it was new frames the comb and contents all had a shade of whatever color I was...

    Re: Wax Moths are Here!

I hate to say it but I think its going to be a tough year dealing with the Wax Moths :( If any of your ideas work let us know.
  17. Re: when will newly installed packages settle down?

Could take up to 24 hours for the bees to calm down. I would check for eggs in about 4-5 days. I assuming they will need to build some comb and collect some pollen and nectar. You don't want to...

Re: Food coloring to Spring syrup?

I used food coloring in the sugar syrup all last Spring and occasionally during the winter when needed. It was neat to see where they stored it. I stopped feeding them since my first inspection in...

Re: Adding a second hive body

I add the second deep when the bees finish drawing out 7 to 8 of the frames. If you wait too long they will get overcrowded.

Re: Do I paint this part of the bottom board?

I paint the entire bottom board on all my hives. For me it's easier to clean-up in Spring. On one of my hives I painted the entire inside and outside of every piece just to see what happens. So...

    Re: Package Installation

If it is a 3lb package I would go for one deep to start with. Since all frames are drawn out it won't talk too long for them to get things going. Once they start raising brood along with storing...

    Re: Hive stand questions?

I usually go at least 8" or more by using cinder blocks. That height will expose the tender underside of the skunk and they don't like to be stung there. Otherwise they can stand in front of the...
