    Re: Cleansing flight safe distance

I wish I knew more about cleansing flights too. My only concern is them pooping in the water sources that I provide. Because the way my apiary is setup, because of a tall fence and tree line, they...

Re: are swarm traps part of swarm mangement?

On not cutting queen cells, I've heard stories of beeks cutting the cells to prevent swarming but the bees swarm anyway and now they're queen-less because you've removed the cells. As for selling...

Re: are swarm traps part of swarm mangement?

All good advice except that I'm not interested in making increases. In my original post I said, "I don't want/can't afford any more colonies". I'm just a backyard hobbyist. The bees might be free...
  5. Re: Is Apple cider vinegar necessary to attract SHB into a Beetle Blaster?

Thanks Apis. As a treatment free beek, I want to disturb the delicate hive ecology and microbes in the bees' gut as little as possible. I wonder if the vinegar and FGMO will have any adverse effects...

are swarm traps part of swarm mangement?

They say that part of being a responsible beekeeper is swarm management, especially if you live in a neighborhood (which I do). So I have some questions because this is my second year. I'm hoping...
  7. Is Apple cider vinegar necessary to attract SHB into a Beetle Blaster?

Is Apple cider vinegar necessary to attract SHB into a Beetle Blaster filled with Food Grade Mineral Oil or will the bees just herd them in there?
  8. Re: Energy, honeybees, and humans. 94 minutes long.

I thought this was great. The point he makes at the 41 min mark is totally me.

    Re: Best Comb Honey Book?

I'll sell you my brand new, unopened book, Honey in the Comb by Carl Everest Killion, for $13 plus shipping. I think I paid $18. I bought it by mistake. I don't like comb or chunk honey.

How long will fondant last in fridge?

I made too much I guess. I thought the girls would take it quicker. If it's in the fridge, uncovered, will it expire?

    Re: Honey leaking from hive...?

I think you're right. Because I even tasted the stuff leaking out and it didn't taste like honey but did look like it. I love Bee Source!

    Re: Honey leaking from hive...?

I experienced the exact same thing and I don't have candy in it so I'd rule that out. It concerned me enough to where I did a full inspection in 50 degree weather. I could not find the reason. But it...

Re: Pollen in East Tennesee in December.

In middle TN this weekend I saw light yellow and dark orange. The girls were also drinking water.

    Drunk bees? True or False?

I don't believe everything I read online or watch on YouTube (Animal Planet or not) so I'm wondering. Do bees get drunk on fermented nectar or honey? I've not heard of this in any of the many bee...

Re: How many hives did you start out with?

If you start with 4 instead of 2 (like the books suggest), the only downside I can see is cost. You will have just wasted more money if you decide beekeeping isn't for you (or your neighbors...
  18. Re: can fondant alone sustain the colony all winter?

Saw some yesterday. It was dark yellow. Dandelion maybe?
  19. can fondant alone sustain the colony all winter?

My 3 Langs are doing great but my TBH swarmed in the summer and the bees that remained didn't make much honey because of that. So during the fall I fed them 2:1 and now that it's colder I'm putting...

    Re: Foundationless Question

I experienced this too. Next season I plan to experiment with just 7 frames in my 8 frame honey supers. And using one of those plastic frame spacers. I'm just not clear when to space them since...

No to both. He captures swarms if I recall.
  22. Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

Their website says this, "We have never used toxic chemicals on our bees. For the last seven years we have used natural oils to strengthen the bees immune system. About that time we switched to the...
  23. Re: Have not even started and already discouraged...

TSWisl, I’ll share my story of how I started out. I installed my first packages on April 1 this year but I started learning the previous July. I began by reading Beekeeping For Dummies (it’s a great...
  24. Do bees repel pests with pheromones? (video)

I was filming the girls on Sunday, bringing in pollen and pestering the drones and I noticed that when they come in contact with ants, they point their butts at the ant and fan their wings. I was...

Re: bees foraging at 40 deg

Sounds like your bees also came from Wolf Creek Apiaries here in TN. I couldn't be happier with those bees. Gentle, very hygienic and yes they fly when it's quite cold out.
