    Re: Wintering Nucs

Yes, they are easy to make, so I stopped with the boxes since I don't need these until July probably. Also need a movable divider board as well, but again easy to make

    Re: Clarification on splits

Thanks. I have now read the entire MP thread and I rethinking how I want to approach this. I will take my weakest of the three and experiment this year. Hope to get 4 nuc's to "Play" with. If it...

    Re: Clarification on splits

I read most of the Michael Palmer thread you pointed me to and yes, a spring nuc will need to be split again in say june and maybe again in August. I am referring specifically to nucs made after the...

    Re: Clarification on splits

Awesome. Thank you. As a follow on question, is there any benefit to splitting/reducing a productive hive to a nuc for overwintering other than you end up with more hives? It sounds like splitting...

    Clarification on splits

My very basic understanding is that a bee keeper can do one of three things with a hive say after the flow is over.

    1. Do nothing because the hive produced well or you don't want colony...

    Re: Queen flew off

This hive is pretty week as well. She flew about 109 ft away and the workers went with her. I caught them and put them back. I don't think it was a swarm. I will tomorrow.

    Queen flew off

Just as I located her during an inspection, she flew off the frame. Is this bad?

Re: Maximize first year nuc honey production

I think this is why some open the brood next

I agree 100% with you. I think we are on the same page. Thank you for the thoughtful conversation.

So my game plan for my 3 nuc's arriving in two...

Re: Maximize first year nuc honey production

My limited experience is that they draw out foundation less frames rather quickly during a flow, sometimes a full empty medium in a week. I don't have experience on how quickly they draw out...

Re: Maximize first year nuc honey production

Thanks for your input. Based on what I saw last year, if there is a flow on, they will draw foundationless top down, bottom up, what ever. It becomes my job to make sure it starts off correctly or...

Re: Maximize first year nuc honey production

Thanks Walt. So rather than alternating, I should place 5-6 frames of drawn comb in the section positions with undrawn on the outside! This is very valuable. Thank you

Re: Maximize first year nuc honey production

Last year was year 1 for me and despite loosing three hives, I have all kinds of foundationless comb from the hives by simply adding a box of empty frames on top as the hive expanded. They would...

Re: Maximize first year nuc honey production

Very close to what I am thinking. but I have one question. Up till the main flow starts, what would the brood box setup look like? should I maintain 1 deep brood box, 1 deep and 1 medium, or 2...

Maximize first year nuc honey production

All of my hives have died (Except a very week one that I am requeening later this week) leaving me plenty of drawn comb for three overwintered nuc's I am getting in a few weeks. I think I have a...

Re: Queen laying multiple eggs in one cell

I expect capped brood to start emerging any day now. I first noticed eggs on April 12 so I am guessing the first eggs were laid about Apr 10th. 20 days later for emerging puts them later this week....

Re: Queen laying multiple eggs in one cell

Yes, but not much. It appears that the queen shut down most of the winter and was slow to get going. First time I noticed eggs was 2 weeks ago. Also, she is laying on the side of a frame, not in...

Sorry, I should have mentioned, the queen is a surviving queen, she was marked from last year.

Queen laying multiple eggs in one cell

I was excited a few weeks ago to find the queen, in my only hive of three to get through the winter, was laying. This colony is very weak however with barley enough workers to cover one side of a...
  23. Re: Is this normal? First complete hive check since November

This is great! I too have a very low bee count in my two hives. After surviving a brutal winter, I was worried mites had gotten to them because I did not treat in the fall. I did a complete...
