Re: Australian Bee Imports in 2014?????

Maybe the lawsuit in this article. http://www.theprogress.com/news/205877041.html
It mentions beekeepers filing suit, but doesnt mention growers.

Re: I want to send bees to N. Dakota

Well said, Gregg!. Almonds were the big game changer as everyone knows. And as you point out, its what happens afterwards that can be a problem. Someone apparently dumped a lot of hives on top of...

    >>Montana has a three mile radius registration law.<<

Exactly. Its understandable that hives were left longer in Ca after almonds because of the late spring in the North. But with the drought in...

    Re: Animal Ear Tags

I use a 1.5" hole. Its big for metal cans but mostly I have the round black plastic jugs which have a bigger cap.
Do you use cans or inside feeders? Just curious.

    Re: Animal Ear Tags

Why? to plug feeder holes..Which I assumed the OP was asking about. The cap size depends on the size drill used.I still prefer a hinged square to close these holes, but a plug works in a pinch.

    Re: Canadian border open?

Those same conditions led to the same problems south of the border this winter, leading to a very real shortage of good hives for almonds, and now a huge demand for queens and bees . So there really...

    Re: Canadian border open?

In the past some Californians owned Canadian honey businesses, and shook packages here to stock the northern outfit. Workers from both countries would work both sides of the border doing almond...

    Re: Canadian border open?

Irwin, its understandable why the border was closed. There was a lot of over reaction going on down here when the T-mites first started showing up, then varroa. But eventually we all got the nasties,...

    Re: Canadian border open?

Letting packages back in to Canada seems like a good idea to me. After all, the USA is open to Canadian honey. Seems we should be able to sell you packages. It worked ok for many years.

    Re: Treatment Free Commercial Beekeepers?

You never know what will set some bees off. My gentle cordovans once went into a stinging frenzy when I used a vac to take bee samples from the entrance for nosema testing.

  21. Re: Bloom is over but bees still aren't released??? anyone else????

  22. Re: Bloom is over but bees still aren't released??? anyone else????

I think experiments showed that those last few blooms dont set any nuts. But I wouldn't want to argue the point with a guy that just wrote out a big pollination check.
  23. Re: Bloom is over but bees still aren't released??? anyone else????

I have hives in some late blooming orchards, but last Saturday as far as i could tell it was all over.I couldn't find any flowers that didn't have a tiny nut in the center. A little shake dropped...
  24. Re: Beginner Question: The Yearly Cost of Beekeeping?

In a drought year, feed will be a BIG expense. When Mother nature doesn't provide, its up to the beekeeper to do it. And with no honey crop to sell to pay for it, credit then becomes an issue.
  25. Re: Beginner Question: The Yearly Cost of Beekeeping?

I think you will find the people who make their living from beekeeping will have significantly more inputs than those who dont.
