    Re: SHB Larvae question

This might be true if hives were the beetles' only food source. Larva that eat enough in the hive to mature and fall to the ground are a VERY small percentage of the total larva that eat rotting...

Vance, certainly willing to learn more - what would you suggest?

    Re: Bearding - Swarm Prevention

When bees start the process of build-up to swarm, they backfill brood comb with nectar. If you find this, watch for queen cells. Started but empty queen cells are ok, but any queen cells with larva...

    Re: Problem hive

No one suggested treating this as a cutout?

Get you some empty deep frames and rubber band the brood comb into them until they hatch. Then remove. Treat honey the way OldTimer said, but don't...
  5. Re: bees are not building into the new box

It sounds like the bees think the top of the hive is at the top of the bottom box still.

I would take the brood frames and put half in the center of the bottom and half in the center of the top...

Re: What are your thoughts on queen excluders

I'm all mediums too. Once the bees quit putting away the honey, I will move any brood frames that are high in the stack down into where I want them, or will put a qe underneath them after insuring...

    Re: Harvesting a single frame

Agreed with swarms - they are wax-making machines. Packages, however, were shaken off of already drawn comb and thus may not have that many wax-making age bees in them. Just my thoughts...

Re: SW TN Bees not putting much away

Thanks, Walt. I was not sure why things were going slowly with all the apparent blooms and no current rain. I am seeing lots or orientation flights which would be expected now.

    I am not at all...

SW TN Bees not putting much away

Anyone else in SW TN seeing no or little increase in stores? On 2 hives last week they had pretty much filled (but not capped) the first super and I checkerboarded it with a second, and on 2 they...

Re: Can Regular Daily rain hurt

We've had rain all spring every 3-4 days. I have two hives that seem to be putting nectar away but they haven't capped much over the past month. Two other hives are just not putting any away at...

  14. Thread: Dead Hive!

    by rweaver7777

    Re: Dead Hive!

I had this happen year before this past winter. Bees in the hive, had one of our cold cold snaps, then next week they were dead. Hadn't treated for varroa in the fall. I suspect they didn't have...

    Re: Is starvation really starvation?

Agreed on this. If it gets cold here, I want my bees having a food source they huddle up against at the top of the frames. But everyone else is 1,000,000% correct, to have a strong hive going into...
  16. Re: Inspection and swarm prevention questions

    1. No.
    2. You need to practice SOME type of swarm prevention until swarm season is over. You did a little by swapping your boxes. Now it is time for Checkerboarding, Opening Sides of Brood Nest,...
  17. Re: Combine queenless swarm with new split?

A double-screen board will do the same as the newspaper but it is more work. If you have one laying around and want to use it.
  18. Re: Getting bees NEXT spring - how to become sustainable?

This is the best thing you could possibly do to fast-forward your learning.
  19. Re: Getting bees NEXT spring - how to become sustainable?

Your DWV has almost a 100% chance of being a result of untreated varroa infestations.

    Re: Thrown into the Fray!

I tried to cut it horizontally to fit snugly but I did not succeed most times. Should have held a frame up to where I was cutting as a guide and I would have done a better job.

    Re: Thrown into the Fray!

I didn't post the end result because I lost track of this post. Here's what happened.

We did the cutout from the inside of the building, cutting the panelling. Got 1/2 of a 5 gal bucketful of...
  22. Re: Puzzling hive, possibly queenless? What can I try that I haven't already?

The last inspection prior to combining showed no laying workers and no queen. Attrition was happening with the warm weather. At least they had a few good last days foraging for a good queenright...
  23. Opening sides of broodnest - mostly drone comb?

    Good afternoon everyone,

I think I have a handle on managing the swarming by providing space for the queen to lay (i.e., to not allow backfilling to take over the brood nest). Regardless of the...

N-Y-Y also. Bees like foundationless frames and mine get drawn perfectly with just a starter strip.
