    Political signs...

I read that folks use politely signs instead of purchasing corrugated plastic...which is not inexpensive.

Sounds great but where does actually get these signs short of robbing them off folks lawns...
  3. Re: Well now, what do we have here? Pics from my last inspection

Re: Are we being greedy and foolish

My hives produced a lot of honey their first year. We left them 2 heavy deeps in the fall and harvested the supers. We did not extract until the fall and we were certain they were up to weight. Our...

Re: How long do most neew beekeepers keep at it?

When I first joined there was a member called Glock that used to post interesting threads. Haven't read anything by him in ages. Is he still keeping bees?

Re: how to mark a queen???

Some kind of marking pen or model paint and a tooth pick plus your fingers to hold the queen. I am not certain if nail polish would work in a pinch or not.
  8. Re: Best smoker fuel I have ever found, what do you use?

We use horse bedding pellets and cardboard. Throw in some dried grass if handy.
  9. Re: Best smoker fuel I have ever found, what do you use?

I start my smoker with a small self ignite propane torch...great thing to have.

    Re: Warning / Safety Signs

I should get a photo. A person in our area has put bee hives on the city Boulevard along the road and pedestrian path. She put some chain link type fencing about 3 feet high and bout 2 feet from the...

Re: Broken comb in a TBH

Yes I can see that would help but how do you remove the metal without breaking the comb attachment?

Re: Two small laying worker hives

It could have me that started this thread! Same situation. One nuc one single deep. I ended up shaking them out after wasting a lot of brood shoring them up. Yes they did eventually raise a couple of...

I use company in Ontario for feeders and basic stuff...would have to look up the name. Mostly I use Mann Lake, Ruhl Bee and Bee Thinking. I live near the border so have it delivered to USA side and...

Re: Broken comb in a TBH

I tried wire as above but don't like the space it makes between the bars and the comb tends to break off again when you remove it.
Unless it is brand new very soft comb I now make few small holes in...

    Rapping frames...

Some time ago I was told that rather than brush bees off frames one should give frame a sharp rap that will dislodge the bees. I have done and continue to use this method.

    Now I questions as to...

Re: Why do people have top bar hives?

I got mine so I could try another type of hive. I must say my bees seem to give them a big thumbs down. They are my hardest hives to keep Queen right.
Tips on how to change this would be appreciated.
  20. Re: Switching from a 10 frame deep to a double 4 frame nuc

My first year I concentrated on observing my hives and what they do as the seasons change. They had lots of brood, drew comb like mad and put down honey until mid July. Then they stopped as if...

Re: Help ... My queen left!

They may have swarmed again with a newly emerged virgin. Those with experience say to leave 2 capped Queen cells and remove the rest.

You may have a virgin return mated. Check for eggs and if...
